I was just thinking how nice it would be if software started shipping on DVDs instead of 3 or more CDs. Of course, companies don't want to put it out on DVD if people can't read them...so....do you have one?

Well unless I can get a really good reason why, I'd like DVDs. I have a million CDs, and I'm sick of trying to keep track of them. Why not fit everything on one disk instead?

My main system has a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW drive; my secondary system has a DVD-RW drive.

ive been waiting for this for a while, but not everyone has a dvd player...
what really bugs me is that when they use multiple cds, i get a freakin paper sleeve and not a jewel case in a $50 game (*cough* UT2K3*cough*)

however, an aol cd came to me in the mail in a dvd case... *sigh*

I used to have one on my old PC, but when I built my new one I had no need.

I have a Harman/Kardon DVD Audio Player, so no point there, and the only PC DVD I have is Encarta which refuses to work on WIN2K or on WINXP.

The only time it will be possible is when I get a DVD+-/R/RW, which will probably when you can get a real good make good quality for around £120.

I still haven't found a single use for a DVD. I almost bought a DVD drive back in 1997 but declined at the last minute. It is now 2003 and I'm so glad I saved my money. I know I'll get one someday. But first they have to drop in price by ~$10 (to match the CD drive price on average) and/or programs I want must come only on DVD.

I have one in my PC but to be honest I never even use it. I just wanted it since it's hardly more expensive than a regular CDROM to begin with. I would like to get a DVD burner soon, though but I have more pressing needs so it will have to sit on the back burner.

Now my home theater DVD player gets a workout since I have a nice collection of movies but I never want to watch them on my PC.

I have a Pioneer 106/s DVD-Rom. Bought it because I didn't have a TV at the time, and wanted to watch movies. Of course, now I have a Sony 5 DVD changer, so it really just sits idle most of the time.

I had a DVD-Rom drive for awhile wateched a few movies with it in my dorm but last time I upgraded my motherboard one of the drives IDE pins was broken in have or pushed in I can't really tell what happen to it. It is just about half as long as the rest of the pins lol. Anyways the thing kills my computer when I have it plugged in. Bascally EVERY thing lags so since I have a DVD player for my TV now I don'treally need it anyways I only really used it to copy CD's or whatever. It would be nice if there was an option of DVD or CD in some applications.

i copy a lot of CD's as i like to have all of them in my car so i needed a read drive to go with my CD-R. i figured it was worth the extra $20 to go with a DVD drive. soon i will replace the CD-R with a DVD+-R and begin copying DVD's for my, uh, car [cough].

Yes, I'm not looking for a sampling of "average" people though. I was more curious about the gamers anyway.

I daresay anyone who's bought a dell in the last year or so have a DVD player if they want it or not, as well.

That's what I was going to say.
With the popularity of combo drives now, a lot of OEMs are putting them in even their basic PCs. I have DVD-ROMs in both machines at home, but one is because it is in my daughter's room and she watches TV & movies (VHS & DVD) on her PC (gotta love the All-in-Wonder).

Only use I get from my dvd player is movies and gaming mag coverdisks.

I'd much rather games came on DVD instead of multiple CD's, and especially if theyre trying to cut down data in order to fit on little CDROMs.

Still, I'm not likely to pay extra for the DVD version, and doubt many other people would, so I guess unless making it DVD and having two distributions becomes cheaper than multi-CD and a single distribution, this probably wont happen at least for games with just 1 or 2 CD's.
