don't completely agree with the statement "but kids are worse!". Family is happy to look after a grandkid over the weekend. After a few years they can go to the bathroom on their own. You can take them in the store with you. After a few years of age they typically stop chewing on random things in the house.

Good point there! Although my kids have managed to blow my mind with some of the stuff they manage as teenagers.

heh, I am owned by a large male cat named Milo. He's a big orange tabby. I take my medicine every day for him, and he's worth it. His brother Boots is worth it, too... but Milo is just the funniest, most loveable kitty. He's like a dog in a cat's body.

And while a pet may poo on the floor...they typically won't turn a diaper into a painters palate.

It's just a different type of responsibility.

We lock up our cats every night. They are still young and crazy... and will sit at the foot of the bed and meow for me at 3AM. They sleep in the den with the doors closed!

Oh hell yeah.... do you remember when my middle child was a poop artist? I thought I was going to go out of my mind.

I was about to put down one of my bigger dog. She had a HUGE mammary tumor that i thought was malignant, but decided to do the surgery anyways and biopsy, and found it wasn't. As if the cost of that wasn't enough, she's now diabetic, so now i have to give her 2 insulin shots each day.

It's a hassle, and everybody including my parents told me i should put her down (well the vets were all on board with me), but i couldn't. She hasn't had that great of a life (previous owners had no idea how to take care of a larger dog), so i just couldn't do it. Even if it means just a couple of more years, i'm hoping i can make it worth it for her (she's 12-14, not too sure).

i wasnt going to answer this poll because it didnt have an answer fo me. i think you should have been more specific. then i read the OP and saw that it was about pets IN THE HOUSE.

NO. I am very adamant about any filthy animals in the house other than a fish tank, for instance. I dont like them in the house because they shed their fur and dander and it bothers people with alergies. There are always "accidents" all over the house in peoples homes that do have them, spots all over the carpet. The overall house smell is terrible. It's not a valid comparison to compare them to kids. Kids are human, and your own offspring. thats quite a bit different than some random animal that will never clean up after itself. at least when kids get older they'll be cleanly (not counting messes of toys and things).

Speaking of kids, it's bad for them. All that animal dander and hair they breath in all the time. Especially when theyre babies. I would never force my kids in anything that dirty 24/7. Cats get up on the firnature, and in any food accessible. the hair floats around the house and lands in anything youre cooking. so filthy. and you cant train a cat. they get up on the counter and you try spraying them. they just learn to not do it around you. you HIT them when they get up there, all they learn is to run away from you. terrible animals. not to mention kids that are born with alergies to them.

I'm more than happy to have outdoor animals. I love gods outdoors, they always seem way happier. Cats too. I hate cats indoors to the point that when i see them i want to kick them, theyre the worst inside animal. man they smell bad. But an outdoor cat, theyre really nice. they even hunt for you. So yeah, pets=outside.

You are very wrong there. There are A LOT of studies that go absolutely against your theory. Having pets in the home actually BOOSTS immune systems of children, not weakens them.

of course it will, theyre constantly fighting off filth. i can constantly give my kids different ailments to fight off and they'll have an iron immune system. i still woundt do that. yuck. home should be clean.

Your pets wouldn't smell if you bathed and brushed them. And if you knew how to train your pets they would probably obey you too.

And vi_edit is correct many studies show that children that grow up with pets have less allergy issues than those that do not.

Well, i feel sorry for the kids that grow up without pets. They offer unconditional love, and allow children to express their love. This carries into adulthood and parenthood as well.

my pets dont smell, they live outside where they can roam. and dont give me that crap. every house ive been to with indoor pets is filthy. look in the corners. if theyve got a hardwood floor. the hair just floats around. its gross, they lick your dishes, and the dander and hair gets in the food.

and yes, you do get used to cats if you have an alergy to them. i do, and i live in a place with 3 (during college) after about a week im just fine alergies-wise. that doesnt mean that im better-off living wiht a bunch of diseases and alergens, and filth.

Hey and guess what? Kids that go to day care and get sick when they are young grow up to be healthier adults. Are you going to send them out in a bubble to protect them from that too?

Building up immunities when you are young is a good thing.

Male, I hope to have a dog or two eventually, had one all through childhood but can't now that I'm in college. Cats can be good, but they generally don't impress me as much as dogs do. I'm thinking of having something Lab-sized, though something like a Great Dane could be a lot of fun. I mean, what's not to like about a dog that doubles as a pony?

I'm a man, enjoy only dogs as pets and nothing else. (I prefer medium to large dogs/dislike lap dog types.)

And it's easy to keep a clean home with dogs: brush them frequently to avoid hair, spend 15 minutes vacuuming and sweeping each week, give them baths from time-to-time and most importantly don't let them into mud or dusty areas outside. Keeping a clean home with dogs was a non-issue for my family. In fact, growing up, us kids brought more dirt inside the house by wearing shoes on carpet after playing outside or rolling around in the dirt and tracking it indoors.

I remember something similar to this years back. Some parents were planning to get their children chickenpox all together, and some people got upset that the parents were doing this... but doctors said it was fine, and probably a GOOD idea.

Yep - we were intentionally exposed to chicken pox. A 'natural vaccine', in a way...because I don't have to worry about getting it again. Since it's much more dangerous to have as an adult, I'm not complaining.

I woudn't want animals in my home. Houses with animals always seem dirty, smelly, and the animals go where they like.

Its kind of a cop out, saying that the animals are strengthening you. Sure they're making your immune system stronger, but so will a lot of other things. You could go hang out in a waiting room at a hospital or something. Anyways, I doubt most people get animals thinking "hey! this will make my kids sick, and they'll fight it off and get strong immune systems." I would feel bad if i had a house with animals and my kids were sick from it all the time. But more than that, I just woudnt want to live in a dirty house.

And whose to say that the body spending time fighting off the sicknesses and making a stonger immune system doesnt detract somewhere else later in life? Maybe they grew less because of it? Or some other young development gets gimped. I woudnt say that a stronger immune system necessarily means sick less.

I am male and NO! I will never have a pet in my home. They are dirty and will make my home dirty. I do not want to ever deal an animal throwing up on my carpet or shedding on my furniture. I have dog-sat a few times and I have no idea how my friend's family enjoys having a pet. It's like having a baby that does more damage. Also, at night it lays down in the exact center of the bed, leaving no where for me to sleep.

Rodents (eg hamsters, gerbils, mice) smell horrible, which rules them out. To me, fish are more like a decoration than a pet. They make look nice, but they're not worth the work. The one thing I would consider would be a cat, but I am allergic.

Overall I would say that, for me, the costs (money, cleaning, etc) of having a pet are not worth the benefits (companionship?).

I hope this gives you some insight, OP.

I fucking hate pets. I wouldn't want to spend excessive time in anyones home that had pets. They bother me. There is absolutely zero chance of my household ever having anything more then fish.

I've had a cat and a dog since elementary school (I'm in college now) and I love them both. Pets are spectacular, and I think a lot of people miss out having them as a child and never learn how to love them later. Male, BTW.
