I've got your back, IronWing. I love coffee, but all alcohol tastes bad to me and people think I'm crazy. I keep trying it, but I've yet to find anything good. Some foods just don't agree with some tastes.

As far as liquor, I recommend a few things:
1) Jack & Coke is standard. It's hard to hate, conceals the alcohol taste fairly well, leaving you with the whiskey flavor ontop of the coke.. I'm guessing that by now you have tried this though.
2) Try a Caipirinha. I've made them at normal alcohol amounts, strong alcohol amounts, and fucking strong alcohol amounts... Always tastes the same, which is delicious.
3) Try a decent beer. By decent beer I mean, if it comes in a 6-pack then there is a 98% chance it's not a good beer. Buy a $10+ bottle that is in a larger (known as a "bomber") bottle in a flavor that you feel you might like from previous tryings. For example, if you were ok with Guiness, try a bomber with the word "Stout" or "Porter" on it.

As drugs go, caffeine is the least worst drug to use recreationally.

Which is why I never mentioned how bad one is. I've heard plenty of stories from folks saying they have 0 problems doing illegal illicit drugs recreationally. I believe it's more-so genetics in relation to addictions that determine how bad a particular drug is for you.

Every morning i have black coffee with a fresh banana.
No sugar or milk added. Because of the black coffee, the banana tastes much sweeter.

Caffeine is not just accepted but encouraged because it makes people more efficient and is slightly addictive, but doesn't cause people to go crazy. I've never gotten the whole caffeine withdrawal thing though. I've stopped coffee cold turkey after drinking around a gallon per day without any noticeable effects. I don't get hangovers either, so maybe I'm just really lucky. Could be genetics, I've had a few family members who quit smoking cold turkey as well.

I guess my drug is soda, it's the one thing I feel truly addicted to.

I'm willing to place a wager that you never a actually stopped cold turkey for an acceptable period of time. You start to feel withdrawls ~24-72 hours from your last caffeine. Of course, you don't just have to stop drinking coffee - which is what a lot of people miss. Every soda, chocolate, and plenty of other processed items contain caffeine.

Also, in order to reset your tolerance in full it requires approx 1.5 - 2 weeks of no caffeine intake. Ask me why I know this....

Never tried #2, but I've tried 1 and 3 with no luck. That alcohol taste always finds a way. I figure I'll survey all of the major types before throwing in the towel. Next up is rye wisky then maybe a pina colada and getting caught in the rain.

I stopped it for about six weeks, but I missed the taste. Didn't have any headaches or anything out of the ordinary, maybe it affected me a little and it just lost in the noise of daily life.

I think it is as much nurture as is nature.
When you carry a lot of unhappiness in your subconscious it will determine how you function in life. And therefore determines how easy you can say no to the addictive nature of drugs.
And when you are a person by nature that is very stressed out or angry all the time, chances are you are going to long for something that makes you feel good and forget.
When you have both nature and nurture against you, you need to be a very disciplined person or you may wonder of the path into the dangerous forest.
Where you will be easy prey for parasitic humans.

Until you can drink a mixed drink, you're never going to have any luck appreciating straight whiskey or scotch.

I definitely think you should try more beers (branch out, find a type you like). If you can't name the basic types of beer (Lager, Porter, Stout, IPA, Ale, Belgian Ale, Wheat, Pilsner, etc...) then you haven't tried enough.

As far as the Caipirinha, I highly reccomend it. If you want to try it, you need a special liquor called Cachaça... You should be able to find it in the rum aisle of any of your big-box liquor stores.

I actually like the stronger flavored alcohols more, but still not very much. I've definitely had over one hundred different beers and several liquors. Scotch has been my favorite liquor by far, but still not a big fan. I've had several mixed drinks with no luck. For some reason I find beer and wine production interesting, I just don't like the end products. I'm definitely not a fan of wine at all.

Nope. I've weaned myself off the daily caffeine kick start.

Structured healthy eating and exercise is your friend.

I made a thread on this previously, but I will reiterate on this again: Everyone has a drug in life. It can be legal, illegal, prescription, coffee, nicotene, caffeine, sex, money, etc... Everyone has a drug of choice that they get high off getting/receiving on a regular basis.... It's just a matter of which they choose, but I guarantee they have at least one.

So my drug is... water? I don't consume anything routinely other than that out of necessity. I have no vice.

So a bunch of work that no one wants to do when they wake up at 5:00 AM....

I believe you when you say it tastes better, but I just don't have the time or effort when the end result is the same... caffeine.

A minor effort in place for my own edification seems most worthwhile. It is like making the bed or doing dishes. I do it for me. 3 minutes spread over 20 minutes gets me from OK to World Class.

I don't like doing it at 5 AM but that is how it happens.

Get yourself a coffee pot with a timer on it, that way you can have fresh coffee in the morning with no effort. And use high quality beans, with a teaspoon of dark dark cacao powder and a tablespoon of butter, and sweeter of your choice.

I did french press for a while until I couldn't find a decent way to keep it hot for me. Now I have a coffee pot at my desk that I pour out about half a cup at a time so it's nice and hot.

But yes, the french press method tastes better no doubt.

What if you pour the French press coffee into the coffee pot?

If I have time I make it at home before work, otherwise I will make it when I get to work. It doesn't affect me that much - having it or not having it. As others have said, it seems genetic the extent to which it affects you. I think its good to drink for health benefits and because its a zero calorie drink, which means you could possibly be foregoing something like soda or another calorie laden beverage.

A full pot on the weekends, two cups in the morning and afternoon during the week. Always black.

Occasionally I'll make some cold brew and drink it straight in the mornings.
