Hell no. I've been doing it for 5 years ever since win 95 and havent had any problems. There are some programs that needs to be rebooted to work properly (like EZCD), in which case I do reboot.

The only problem with rebooting after newly installed software is during a download. I don't want to lose any data or be unable to reconnect, so I usually reboot later or if things get really crazy.

The trouble is that it doesn't tell yo to, it asks you if you want to. It leaves it up to me and dumps all the moral, spiritual, and technical ambeguities right in my lap. Oh sh!t, do I reboot now or later? Jesus, what are the pros and cons. Please oh please don't make me decide this. How do I know? What if I get it worng? What will happen? I can't even view the poll to glean the wisdom of the masses because I'd have to choose between three infinitely complex choices.

99.9999999% it is completely unnecessary, and of those .0000001% that do need it, at least 80% could have been designed so that a reboot would not be required.

Furthermore, it has never actually been necessary for me to close all running apps before performing an instalation.

Nope, I never do. I can never remember a program not working before the reboot, and then working after it either.

i dont. i hate rebooting. i want my system to be always up, and it is!

so what I do is kind of keep track in my mind what all I have installed that asked me to reboot since the last time I rebooted (normally weeks).. then once I acutally reboot usually something f*cks up since I have like all this crap going into effect with the reboot


i just get the mentality from work, I work as a mainframe computer operator. we have weekly scheduled IPL's (basically a reboot on a larger scale) for most of the systems, but one for example they never ipl unless they have to (software upgrade or patch which requires IPL). its a similar concept, sometimes we have 8 changes going into effect when we IPL, those are the days you cross your fingers and hope everything works when you pop it
