Think about it. Many here support socialized healthcare and feel it should be a "right" since it is often required to live.

Well, in ALL cases food is required to live. So by that standard, shouldn't food be socialized as well?

Should Our entire food industry be socialized and food be free to all?

It's not like many people die of hunger in US, rather the opposite. But maybe it should be more expensive to buy unhealthy food than healthy.

Well, socialized food would mean an end to unhealthy foods as the government nanny-state would control all food production.

It wouldn't be very efficient. In Sweden they put higher VAT on candy, soda and fatty products and a low on fruit, vegetables etc. So producers will need to make healthy products if they are going to compete on price. It's still a free market, but the government has set some rules which are equal to all producers. Much more efficient.

If food where free, then more might be able to afford to buy insurance for healthcare. Personally I think it's better the other way around, as trading food works better with "the means of the market" than healthcare.

btw, I would think this belongs in P/N?

I support socialized food partly to my belief that nobody should go hungry and die. However there are other reasons like decreased obesity(high taxes on junk foods, low taxes on vegetables and fruits as biostud suggested) and purely economic gains(taxes).

It used to be in China where you weren't allowed to cook at home and had to eat at a government cafeteria and you had a food Quota each month.

As history has shown, it hasn't worked too well.

Yes, because that's such a problem in the US.

Socialized food? So instead of a Whopper I'd get a Comrade Whopper with Comrade Fries and a Comrade Diet Coke?

I agree that people should not starve and the government should assist those who cannot provide food for themselves but that isn't to say that the "entire food industry be socialized and food be free to all."

Thats the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. It works for poor communities that survive by working together, but not in the US.

Read your own words... cuz I never said that you supported it either. You must have busted out the jump to conclusions mat for that one.

Of course I did. What fun is there without the trusty mat?

The downside is that you live in Sweden...

No way.

Government != babysitter.

The government is here to keep us safe and in order. Not to give us everything we do at the expense of those who worked hard. I think the modern concept of 'needy' is skewed. Some people were born with this idea that they are needy(just because), and are therefore entitled to handouts; and if they don't get them then life isn't fair. Just because you're poor doesn't mean you have to be.

yes, but I don't think the US can support our current consumerism for long. We simply don't output enough for us to be this rich.

I used to work in a grocery store and 99% of the time I could tell when a person was using food stamps before they even pulled them out.

Here are some signs of food stamp users

#1 they would buy like $200-$400 worth of groceries(a lot more than the average family)

#2 a lot would buy expensive stuff like lobster(very popular) crab, filet mignons, etc.

#3 they would come in at less busy times, usually early in the morning so I guess they wouldnt be seen using food stamps.
