Hate Apple mice, love the trackpads

this. i got a magic mouse. i like the aesthetics of it, but i hate bluetooth response on these mice. apple might as well incorporate their own radio receiver for their own mice so they don't have to go through bluetooth.

also, the tracking speed is absolutely pathetic and the need to edit tracking speeds via console to get it high enough to suit my usage is absolutely annoying.

Should give MagicPrefs a whirl.

Took the plunge yesterday and forked over $70 for a Magic Mouse.

It was horrid at first. Then I learned about Better Touch Tool.

And now using the Touchpad feels weird...

I sold my Magic Mouse that came with my new iMac in the span of 24 hours. I bought a Magic Trackpad since it is so convenient for gestures in my left hand.

OSX mousing acceleration is intolerable. I prefer my Razer Orochi.

You can adjust all of that using Better Touch Tool. It'll let you configure all kinds of gestures imaginable, swap buttons, and fix mouse acceleration up to 11.5x higher than OSX maximum mousing acceleration.

For mine, I added in pinch to zoom and three-finger swipes for expose/desktop, and boosted mouse acceleration a bit.

But it's not like everyone knew about it.

In any case, it also lets you configure the Trackpad.

My problem with the Magic Mouse is the size of the touch area and the fact that you are still moving it around. With the magic Trackpad, you have a huge touch area, and it stays stationary, much easier to pull of the gestures that way.

I don't care about the gestures, it's the mouse acceleration you can't get around with apple mice.

I've been using Btt forever, it's more useful for windows7 window snapping feature.

Mouse acceleration is there in BTT. I'm not sure what you're talking about? You can increase it to over 10 times Apple's maximum speed.

Apple's mice accelerate.

Mice should not accelerate.

Accelerate means a change in velocity.

I use the Magic Trackpad all day. I really, really enjoy using it over a mouse. I got a Logitech G5 on my PC for gaming. I just never could get comfortable with the Magic Mouse that came with my iMac. I might check out BTT but then again, should I bother since I'm just going to keep using the Magic Trackpad.

As far as the iMac keyboard. I'm not the biggest fan. I use it when the baby is sleeping or at night. Otherwise, I'm typing on my Unicomp SpaceSaver — quite the opposite of the imac kb. Buckling Spring clicky action for the mothaaa efffinn wiin.

There's stashes of discarded Apple perifs all over the studio where I work- mostly outdated keyboards and such.

But Apple mice ALWAYS end up in the discarded bins first thing- it seems few people (that actually use their computers to get work done) can stand them.

The first thing that happens when people get a Mac upgrade is they toss the included POS Apple mouse, and then they continue using their preferred *real* mouse designed by someone that understands that the human hand doesn't do its best work hour after hour with a boutique device that had gimmicky looks as priority #1 and function/ergonomics as distant after-thoughts.

In my office, I've got my own private stash of Apple mice tossed in a drawer that I've never used from just about every single Mac upgrade I've had since 2004. At my previous job, I had the same thing- a drawer full of Apple mice dating back to the mid 90's. Apple's never made a mouse I would consider using for work- from the days of their being stuck on single-button-stupid... to WTF-hockey-puck... to present.

I prefer their trackpads quite honestly. My magic mouse is ok. It's scratched up my desk even though it shouldn't (I didn't get a mouse pad bc I hate them, and hate the desk I'm using, so whatever). The battery life is decent. It seems like the only program it works really well with is iphoto, it's almost like they designed the mouse for it and nothing else. A bit odd, but I wouldn't totally put it past them either.

Well, some people prefer to have their mice speed up with fast hand movement and slow down with delicate movements. I'm one of them.

I am with you on this one, especially on a trackpad, quick little flick of the wrist and you are across the screen, move the mouse slow for fine detail work.

yeah apple junk is worthless (keyboard/mouse) for coding. i figure mac folks just code at 50% the rate of microsoft people due to the keyboard/mouse handicap.

Here's what I do when we get a new Mac for someone in our office.

1. Unpack new Mac.
2. Leave mouse in the box.
3. Hookup Logitech mouse.
4. Install newest LCC.
5. Profit.
