Why do people insist on believing that their preferences in music, art, food, etc are universal?

Not my thing, but I don't bash certain styles of music just because I don't like them.

Well, Except Rap.

I dont insist on anything of the sort. I like all kinds of music, and listen to a lot more than D&B... however I never pass up an opportunity to introduce people to it. D&B = my life.

You are absolutely right, his music is the mixture of several different genres. People just like classifying everything, and if I had to choose a genre for BT, I would say he was closest to trance. But, like you said, he does not make trance exclusively. I don't think it matters what label you stick on him, though. The important thing is that good and fresh trance-ish music still exists.

Yeah, I agree. I still listen to trance every now and then just for a change, and I like a lot of it. BT is one of my favorite artists simply because hes one of the people who push electronic music forward, beyond labels... I just find a lot more of the people who are breaking through the genre barriers in 'drum and bass' music than I find them in 'trance' That and Im a total sucker for complex drum beats.

Ok, I just download some Paul Oakenfold and Ayumi Hamasaki stuff and I'm not impressed. I must say the songs all sound very, very similar. If I was in a club, maybe, but just listening to? Not for me.

Ok, now go and download some jungle or d&b before you write off electronic music. Go to Drum and Bass Arena and Bassdrive and come to the dark side

If its nothing but a beat I'm not interested.

Try listening to Sasha and Digweed - Northern Exposure (Disc One)
:Q

or if you are too lazy to listen to a 80 minute mix, try this song:
Sarah McLachlan - Remixed - 05 - Silence (DJ Tiësto's in Search of Sunrise Remix)

Listened to the Sarah McLachlan and I still don't like it. Now you try:
Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People - 06 - Ratts of the Capital
That's some good stuff,
if you like more melodic stuff then, northern exposure all the way

try this track for a different style:
John Digweed - Bedrock (Disc 1) - 03 - BPT feat. Danny Morales - Moody
or
John Digweed - Bedrock (Disc 1) - 04 - C12 feat. Jole - Judy

Here's a great website for finding some good trance artists: TranceAddict
Some great songs are available for download, here.
My favourites are:

Solar Stone feat. Liz Fields - Speak In Sympathy
Sun Decade - I'm Alone
Thrillseekers - Dreaming Of You
Solid Sessions - Janeiro

Some of the best trance I have ever heard.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say it sucks, thereby grouping it with such "bands" as Limp Bizkit and Eminem, but its not my cup of tea. I don't like electronic music; I prefer music that requires physical talent as well as imagination. I respect great guitarists and drummers for their physical abilities as well as their songwiting capabilities, but electronic music has none of that.

Also, it always seems "fake" to me. Computer-generated music. It's not the true manifestation of human imagination because men simply create the melody and electronics actually perform the music. I like the "sloppiness" inherent in music; a drummer hits a wrong beat, a guitarist slides his hand down the strings, etc. I like hearing that stuff and knowing that its real people making the music, someone just like me, no better, no worse.

I don't know why everyone bags on trance, unless it's the whole "e-tard raver" stigma associated with it. I like trance, and while it CAN be repetitive, there is a lot of good stuff out there that doesn't all sound the same. Yes, it's generated on computers and synthesizers, but that doesn't make it any less valid than something played on guitar or whatnot. You can still come up with a good beat and layer it with other beats, change the rhythm and tempo, etc. to come up with a good trance mix or song. Not to mention, the DJ spinning it can make or break the music.

Be a little more open-minded, people.

Ok, after lsitening to the stream on that website, I'm definitely saying it sucks. The entire song was some beat about 6 notes long being repeated indefinitely. I listened for about 5 minutes and the song never ended or changed.... same 6 notes repeated over some horn sound in the background.

The music is boring and repetetive as hell.

WOW. You listened to 5 minutes of it and decided it sucks. How informed of you. Sheesh. Try listening to some different styles of trance for more than 5 minutes before automatically saying it sucks.

I'd rather not, to be honest. It isn't even remotely close to anything I'd ever consider listening to by choice.

Between the songs that I downloaded and that site that I listened to I can say that I do have the general gist of dance trance (see my sig). If you could point me to some more ambient trance or some with an actual melody or song structure I'll check that out (I haven't downloaded the stuff NuclearFusion suggested, but I'll give that a shot later). It seems to be rap music without the vocals and made with computers.

ok, lemme see if i can give some insight to all you non-trance listeners.

first off, you cant listen to trance single by single. that isnt how it was "meant" to be heard. trance is fluid and should be heard in a set (colllaboration of songs chosen by the dj in order to create a mood or atmosphere).

second, the reason why most songs go (and to quote your sig):

"thump thump thump thump thump buzz thump thump thump thump buzz ticaticaticatica thump thump thump thump buzz ticaticaticatica BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM psssssss (misc electronic effects) t...h...u...m..p THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP BUZZ"

is that it is a single. it wasnt meant to be heard by itself. in truth, most songs start out with that famliar "bump bump" because it is easier for a DJ to mix 2 songs together (hence the fluidness i was speaking of).

so with this tid bit of info, one thing that separates a good DJ from a bad one is how seamless the transition from one song is to the next. DigitallyImported doesnt play one big set 24/7/365. they are literally like a radio station and play singles.

what you should do is pick a DJ and download one of his "sets" (typically about 74min+).

btw, to add to the list of songs to listen to:
- Southern Sun <----everyone who hasnt heard this song always asks, "who does the vocals". gets em everytime
- oceanlab - sky falls down <----Justine Suissa on vocals (another big name in vocals)
- Janeiro (Armin Van Buuren Remix)
- Love Will Come (6AM Mix) <----Jan Johnston does vocals, and practically every trance addict loves her voice

I would have to say, these are the songs i would choose if i was trying to convert a non-trance believer. I was pretty general on some of those songs...but specific on a couple.

at any rate, i should mention that i do listen to other stuff besides trance. I just bought Evanescence's Fallen as well as some New Age:Q stuff and classical (well Bond is neo classical or something like that right?)

trance is what i use to get me hyped up and feeling good.

one last note: no trance doesnt suck. no classical doesnt suck. no heavy metal, D&B, jungle, pop, R&B, and jazz do not suck. I just dont listen to them all. now can we cut with the genre bashing?
