I always bought it for my cars in Gran Turismo 3.

That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

edit: Also, poll is confusing.

"Would you buy a new car without ESP/ESC?" No

"Electronic Stability Control" Yes

Nope, I just wish that when it kicks in on my FJ it would do so quietly instead of ding ding dinging. The chime is very distracting when occupied with steering out of a skid.

That is true. I voted no as in "No, I would not buy a new car without ESP/ESC."

When I bought my Mazda3 a year ago I wasn't planning on spending the extra $500 on DSC/TC, but Consumer Reports sold me on it so I got it. It probably hasn't saved me from an accident, but I never have second guessed the decision to get it. It seems to be a very worthwhile safety feature

ESC and ESP are the same thing FYI, and my question is made that way so I get people to actually read the question.

Depends. I prefer to drive the car instead of it driving me. But... if it was made by Ferarri, Astin Martin, Audi, etc.... then hell yeah as long as I could turn it off at will.

I know they are the same thing, but I'm pointing out that you are asking one question in the post and a different one in the poll.

Since it's mandatory in the US on all vehicles by 2012, it would seem to be a moot point. 75% of 2010, 95% of 2011, and 100% of 2012 models are required to have it.

IIHS also requires it to earn the Top Safety Pick label for the vehicle.

I rather like all the stability control/traction control options the GM system offers.

My corvette had a few modes:
traction/esc on
traction/esc off
copetitive driving - no traction, partial ESC (let you get the ass-end way out if you did it in a controlled manner, but would stop it from snap oversteer)

My Sky RL has all those plus
traction off, full ESC - this one let you spin the tires but not get the car sideways.

Personally I love competitive driving mode, the car is still responsive to everything I want it to do, but if the car feels that the oversteer is out of control (that I'm about to do a full spin around) it'll play with the brakes and throttle to bring the car back in line.

If I remember correctly the manual states that in competitive driving mode the car will modulate the brakes and throttle to keep the car moving in the direction the wheels are pointed. Basically it's a drift mode

But if I'm shopping for a sports car with a well designed chassis it is not a deal breaker for me. (Viper, Noble, Etc.)

I can turn the ESP off in my new Jeep.

Tap the button and it turns off the traction control, hold it in and it turns off the traction control and the ESP.

It's not traction control.

BMW has DTC and DSC. Sometimes I like turning both traction and stability control off during spirited driving.

I guess I just don't find stability control intrusive. Traction control is annoying though. Even speeding up a little too briskly will set it off.

Yes, I would buy a vehicle without it..while it may be nice to have, I have been driving without it for 25 years and have not had a single accident.

As hard as you may try, you just cant fix stupid...

If it were a standard feature on a car I was interested in I'd get it. I don't actively seek it out.

Personally, no, unless I can turn it on or off as I see fit. There are times I want the car to be fun to drive and that won't happen with that system turned on. No power slides or taking a corner right at the limits. That said, I think there is a mandate that all new cars sold after 2012 must be equipped with this system. This is to help the idiots that have no idea how to control a car, especially SUV type vehicles which are easy to lose control in. Also this type of system, while it has benefits, also comes with high cost to maintain. The struts will cost much more and now, you have yet another computer and sensors to contend with (meaning you likely need the dealer to diagnose it $$$)

My 2008 RX-8 has Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control.

I shut both off every time I get into the car, because I love to kick the rear lose and modulate traction with my right foot.

When I am tired and the weather is really bad where I am driving (rain, ice, snow etc), I turn it on to keep any mistakes on my part to a min.

No one can control the car as fast and accurately as ESP can.

People state " I know how to drive" well even the most experienced drivers cant combat to how well ESP works. If you see a video of an experienced driver handle the car with ESP Off its still not as good as ESP ON. Saying you dont need it is kinda stupid, for what 400 bucks or so its worth it hands down.

Most cars with ESP have options to Disable them, depending on the system it can be all the way off to kinda still there.

[sarcasm]I can... i can also tap the brakes as fast as abs can.[/sarcasm]

The competitive mode in gm cars like crazySOB297 mentioned is great, you can do a perfectly controlled drift with ease.
And in winter esc/abs is a life saver.
