Has anyone every done a cruise from New York? Granted, none of them have good destinations, but how much does it really matter if the majority of time is spent on the cruise ship anyways?

my next cruise is leaving out of NY, and my last cruise was from NJ, I am from the northeast and just dont like to fly, I am paying about the same price as a cruise leaving out of FL + RT airfare.
they get ridiculously cheaper if you go with 3 or more people (at least for NCL). Like $500pp cheaper.

BTW, which cruiselines ?

Carnival, on the legend, the one from NJ was RCL, voyager of the seas.

Depends on what kind of vacation I'm looking for.

I've been on 3 cruises and have stayed at 4 different all-inclusive resorts.
I don't think one is better than the other, they are just different. Each with their own pros and cons

While not all all-inclusives/cruises are the same, alot of them are similar.

One the whole, I'd say food is better on cruises. While many all-inclusive resorts have a nice restaurant you can go to dinner at,
the average dinners and meals are better on cruises. However, in both places you can get food any time you would like. Although
some all-inclusives do not offer room service.

Drinks IMHO are nicer at all-inclusives. There is something to be said for not having to sign for anything. While I realize the price of drinks are part of the bill, there
is something to be said for not having to sign or keep a card on you everytime you want to order a drink.

I think that if you want to do alot of stuff then cruises are usually the way to go, because of days at port. While if you are looking for a layed back vacation all-inclusives
are probably a better idea. Not that you cannot take it easy on cruises and do alot of activities at all-inclusives. Its just I have found that cruises with excursions
tend to push you to do more, especially when you are at port. You can relax during days at sea, but depending on the cruise, sometimes you only get 2 of those. While
when you are at all-inclusives any activities you want to do, you schedule at your own time and leisure.

You may feel compelled to go ashore, but there's really nothing that says you have to. My wife and I went on an early snorkeling trip in St. Thomas and then used the rest of the day to enjoy the ship while so many other people were ashore. We spent the whole afternoon loafing in the hot tubs and laying around reading and doing honeymoon-type things (use your imagination) and we didn't feel that we missed out on much of anything.

Cruises are great fun.

I agree about Nassau.. Bahama's was dirty and lots of solicitors. I was offered weed within 5 minutes of getting off the ship. I doubt I could stand a week at Nassau unless I was at Atlantis with tons of cash.

I really like Barbados. We wandered off the tourist part of town and wandered the back streets.. and drank some beers with the locals. It was a good time.

I've been on two cruises, one was Princess and one was Royal Caribbean. I personally enjoyed the Princess one better because it was a cleaner (probably newer) and nicer ship. My big problem with the Royal Caribbean boat was that it somehow managed to crash into a pier in Cozumel which knocked out half of the ships propulsion. We missed our flight home and it was all a rather stressful experience.

I do prefer cruises to resorts because after a while in one spot, things start to get a little boring. You've done everything there is to do. Whereas on a boat, other than the two days at sea, you've got lots of different ports to explore.

Don't get me wrong, you can definitely do that one a cruise. I've done it. Its a blast to have a nearly empty boat. My only point was that if you are looking to just relax the whole time, if you don't care too much about any of the ports, aren't concerned with leaving getting off at the stops, an all-inclusive might be the better place.

Personally I love both Cruises and All-Inclusives. To the point were I've taken vacations that consist of both.

I ended things with the girl I was dating at the time when we went on our cruise together. We went on an Eastern Caribbean Cruise and the boat was filled with people in their 50's and 60's. There was maybe 4-5 under 30 people on the boat, besides us. It was funny, it seemed like the favorite attraction for the people on the boat was the laundry room. We would dock at a place such as Barbados, and instead of getting off the boat, there would be lines to the laundromat, lol.

The other thing that sucked is we never got a chance to experience the night life of the locations. We usually had to be on the boat by 6pm.

Good information here, but I have a Q. We're considering going for our honeymoon on a cruise. How LONG (7 days? 12 days? etc?) should we choose? I don't want to get bored with it, but I want plenty of time for sex (I mean let's be honest, it'll be the #1 priority) and to enjoy what will probably be the best 1-2 weeks of my life. Suggestions? And also, what cruise line(s) are more catered to honeymooners?

which cruiseline ? Carnival is supposed to be for the younger crowds. That's almost a for-sure.

I have to agree to a certain extent. I've never been on a cruise...but plan on going on some shortly (my last long-term girlfriend did not like them because all she thought she would be doing was eating).

The part I like about it is how little effort is involved in the vacation...which is exactly what a vacation should be.

That being said, I like taking European vacations and visiting countries like Spain, Ireland, Germany, etc....and that is really hard to do with a cruise.

in my opinion, anything longer than 7 days is too much to be on a boat with similar surroundings. And don't worry, you'll have plenty of alone time in the staterooms everynight. Have at it.

NO, it was horrible. I went on a seven day cruise through the Carribean last year and I hated it. After the second or third day, I was thinking to myself "How much longer do I have on this damn boat." It gets boring and old fast. Yes, you can eat all you want, but the food gets nasty and old very quick. Yes, there are pools, but that gets old and boring after the first hour. Yes, there is live entertainment, but they are very similar to high school drama productions. I will admit though, stopping at different locations for the day was fun. Thats the only fun part of the cruise. I would never take a cruise for means of traveling again. Id rather fly to a destination and do my thing, because afterall, The boat itself is not a vacation. You can do all of that in your hometown, so why shell out the extra thousands to eat at a buffet and swim in a pool for a week.

I also got seasick around 5 days into the trip, a bad sunburn, and the food was terrible. To be honest it would be nice to head down to a single place in the Caribbean for a few days, then come back home. I really looked forward coming back to the good ol' USA after the trip was over.

As Lola said, we have been on one HAL and one RCL cruise, along with Hawaii twice. I'll take Hawaii any day over a cruise, but a cruise is cheaper. I think we paid around $1000/pp for a suitefor HAL.

I prefer to explore new and interesting things rather than shop, so most of the excursions we have gone on are tours or the islands. I think of cruising as a sampler platter of the locations. It gives you a taste of each island and allows you to decide if you would ever come there again on a trip. I would love to spend a few days on Tortola or St. Maarten driving around and exploring the history.

Then again, I am not one for lying on the beach at all. This is why I wouldn't really an all-inclusive.
