<< WASHINGTON -- Federal police are reportedly increasing Internet surveillance after Tuesday's deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Just hours after three airplanes smashed into the buildings in what some U.S. legislators have dubbed a second Pearl Harbor, FBI agents began to visit Web-based, e-mail firms and network providers, according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition of anonymity.

An administrator at one major network service provider said that FBI agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday "with a couple of Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in our core, along with offers to actually pay for circuits and costs."

As much as I am against Carnivore I think it may be necessary. We know damn well these terrorists weren't on the phone to each other talking about this but probably using AOL IM, IRC, email and other internet based communications.

what in the hell technically does carnivore do?

from what i gather, its a solaris machine that packet sniffs for email header packets, and then captures the email if it matches the criteria?

someone please explain.. im pretty curious.

Survelence is survelence is survelence, regardless how it is being done.

However, there is no right to internet privacy, so I don't know what to think. I know I'm not breaking any laws over the net, so I don't really care.

If that's all it is (I don't have the time to read more thoroughly at the moment), then I wouldn't have a problem with this. If you're not writing anything wrong, then you have no proble, you're not affected.

i am totally against it. i am not doing anything illegal via email, but i believe it is an invasion of privacy. there are also no guarantees that the technology will not be miss-used by those in charge of it for personal gain. many businesses share valuable information via email and they would not want their privacy compromised and nor do i.

im for the technology, but only if the FBI follows the limits of it, namely only using where subpeoenas are issued.

Doubt it will help when the terrorists could be using high level encryption.

I agree in a way and disagree in another.

If you do want your privacy on the internet as you stated, then you allready know the price...The WTC and Pentagon attacks.

If you give up some of your privacy, then you may not have to pay the other price.

We elect how to live our lives. Airport security years ago was a bitch and people complained. Over years it has relaxed because that how Americans wanted it. Most don't realize that everything comes with a price.

Taken from article;

"The FBI's controversial Carnivore spy system, which has been renamed DCS1000, is a specially configured Windows computer designed to sit on an Internet provider's network and monitor electronic communications. To retrieve the stored data, an agent stops by to pick up a removable hard drive with the information that the Carnivore system was configured to record. "

Interesting that Carnivore is windows based. Hopefully it's not on a 9X/Me machine

I'm not doing anything illegal, so go ahead! If it is going to catch criminals and terrorists in the future, I support it.
