Only use - here, but with my new DVD±R/RW that can do 8x with +R, I might make the switch once my last few dozen blanks are used.

4 DVD players here and +R only works in 2 of them.
-R works in all of them.

I noticed alot of the newer DVD players down at Best Buy (and other places) say if they have compatability with DVD +/- R/RW discs. I bought a Sony they had there that claimed it plays all of the common formats (model DVP-NS725P). So far it hasn't had a hiccup with any of my "backed up" discs. It didn't cost much either.

I have an old Sony DVD Player, made before DVD burners were commercially available, but so far I'm having 100% success w/ it so far

Both types work fine. Right now I am using some cheap Sonic -R media for DVDs.

I only have +R which didn't work in my Toshiba 3700 but plays fine in my panasonic 35s so I use bitsetting to change it from +R to DVD-ROM and has worked in my Toshiba! I have a Liteon 411s DVD-burner which supports bitsetting

I like + better (but also use - since I have a -/+ burner) plays just fine in my panasonic dvd player.

If you have a player that doesn't support + it's time to get a new player

-R is the original burning standard and the most compatible.
+R was made by consortium who didn't want to pay the royalties on -r.
I have had more success with DVD players and even older DVD ROMs with -r but I use +R more often because they're faster.
Also, +R now supports bit setting which may or may not make them more compatible than -R.

well without reading any posts in this thread, here's my take. I used cheapo Sonic 2x (Longhorn01 or whatever) DVD-R, $30 shipped for a 50 pack. Burned them all at 4x with my Liteon851S, and all 50 worked on my Apex, Digarix, and Cyberhome cheapo Asian DVD players, along with my Xbox with samsung drive.

I got my 100 memorex ricohjpn01 DVD+R's from the officedepot deal a couple days ago, and I backed up an xbox game at 4x and my xbox wouldn't read it.

I use DVDShrink to backup most of my movies, unless it's something like Casino that's really long where you need to compress it 50% for just the movie to fit it onto one disc, in which case I use dvddecrypter and the freeware dvdfab.

I've found that I can usually get most movies with some extras to fit on one disc and keep the compression below 30%
