Some more info about my choice
In the early 1960's, a University of Florida research team began development of a
drink for rapid fluid replacement to help the body prevent dehydration caused by hot
weather and physical exertion. The drink's formulation of carbohydrates and electrolytes
was based upon the latest scientific research and the fact that the Gators football team,
competing in the Florida heat, had developed a tendency to fade in the second half of the
game. Scientific studies showed that these athletes could benefit by replacing fluid, energy
and electrolytes lost during activity. By 1965, researchers began testing this beverage
known as "Gatorade" on ten members of the football team.
The following year, the Florida Gators became known as the "second half team" for their
ability to dominate opponents in the third and fourth quarters of games. In fact, on January
1, 1967, when the Gators beat Georgia Tech 27-12 in the Orange Bowl, Georgia Tech
Head Coach Bobby Dodd told reporters his team lost because "We didn't have
Gatorade...that made the difference." Dodd's statement was published in Sports
Illustrated, marking the beginning of the brand's ascent to a billion-dollar+ sports drink.
