Star Wars.. Trekkies are geeks but they usually keep it pretty much confined to the conventions...

From my personal experience with individuals from both camps....Trekkies. The hard-core ones just freak me out.

Trekkies scare me, I mean I like star trek, but some of these people are really hardcore with their star trek liking.

As much as I despise everything "Star Wars" i do believe trekkies are worse. The Triumph peice was masterful but Trekkies take things to another level with their Klingon dictionaries and their conventions and such. I love star trek but I (sadly) must concede that Trekkies are, in fact, nuttier than them all.

Star Wars fans are just having fun..trekkies take it much more serious...when you learn a made up language(klingon) you're a hardcore nerdlinger.
haven't really seen a lotr fanatic, probably don't want to either, since they have elvish....

well, heres how i classify it:

star wars: your generic geek, sometimes dressed up, waits a week for star wars to open (a la jason fox of fox trot)
lord of the rings: much more hardcore, the people who are like "middle earth is real! i know all of the elvish languages!"
star trek: wow. just wow.

I've pretty bad star wars fans, but overall I think trekkies are the largest and since they are, seems to have a large geek presence.

What's really ironic is that I recall reading about a American boy lost in Japan IIRC, that was able to get help from a Japanese kid even though they had a language barrier because they discovered they both spoke Klingon!

At one point, I could speak enough Klingon for a light conversation. I tried doing the same thing with quenya (the elven language in LOTR), but couldnt keep myself interested enough in it long enough to learn anything.

On the star wars end, I can speak fluent gibberish in a voice that sounds almost exactly like the Geonasians in ATOC.

That takes a not insignificant amount of talent.. Useless, but impressive.

I recall an episode of the old sitcom Night Court where they brought in two separate groups of Trekkies, one dressed in TOS uniforms, the other in TNG outfits (one guy with a visor), and they were arguing with each other over which was the "real" Star Trek..

Trekkies. At least some remotely cool people are Star Wars and LOTR fans...while about 99% of Star Trek fans are total weirdos.

In Oceans 11, Matt Damon said he entered 1138 as the code when they were breaking into the vault...apparently he's a big Star Wars (lucas) fan.
