POLL: High School Sweethearts --> College

Okay, so after going through college (I'm graduating in a week), and going to meet up with all my old high school buddies in a kind of reunion, I've been wondering....

Out of all the high school bf/gf relationships here, who here actually knows or has one that has lasted THOUGH college. NOTE: these high school sweethearts had to go to college, I'm not talking about ones who didn't go to college or dropped out after a year.

My sister and her husband were bf/gf in highschool and went to college together for 4 years, both got their degrees, and now they're married and just had their first kid. It can happen, it just takes the right person and discipline.

i have a friend who's made it through college...they did break up a few times but got back together....still not married though...not sure if it will happen.

My sister started dating her high school sweetheart in their junior year. They stayed together through college and are now married, 9 years later. My English teacher in high school was still married to his HS sweetheart after 45 years. I'm sure they almost always fail, but high school relationships CAN last.

Yeah, I know of ONE. They started datinig freshman year of high school and are still together, and he's had to have brain surgerey and all sorts of fun things.

As someone who's in a serious HS relationship (as serious as a HS relationship can be), what do you think the deciding factors are in a relationship that allow them to make it through college etc.?

Had two friends in high school who started dating Junior year. They were together when they went to college and broke up after a year or two. She eventually got engaged to someone else, but then broke it off. They ended up getting back together and recently got married.

My brother just got married to his. They started when he was 16(she 15), he went to college a year ahead, then she went to a different school.

It usually doesn't work but certainly can

I know several couples that were together in HS and are still together.

One just celebrated their 38th anniversary. They got married in June of 68, a day after graduation.
Another couple I know just passed the 30 year mark. But the longest ones I know are a couple that
started going out in the SEVENTH GRADE, and have never dated anyone else, and will soon celebrate
their 47th anniversary! She was hot when she was young, but recently is turning into a scarecrow.
I can't imagine being with someone that long, and only that person on top of it all.

I know two couples who made it from senior year of high school through college graduation, then through marriage. Both couples have been married for two years now. One couple did take a break for a few months before getting back together; in that span of time he dated around and came back to her.

Given that, I would say those two couples are part of a very, very small minority.

2 people i went to high school with both got married last year after finishing 4 years of college


they went to different schools, but saw each other every weekend and occassionally during the week.

I know of one, it is a matter of luck in the end.

One of the posters mentioned a couple being otgether since 7th grade; that is freaky and inspiring.

A couple friends of mine just got married last year. We graduated HS about 6 years ago, and they were dating since Sophmore year. Both got their degrees, he's finished his masters and I believe he's working on his doctorate. Don't think I've ever seen a more perfect couple among my friends ever.

Yah, you need to update poll to include # of successful relationships, as I only know of one...but know many failed.

when it comes to hs relationships and going to college, i would honestly say that if you are still together at thanksgiving or christmas then its a rare occurance. i just remember my freshman year in college and when everybody came back after christmas break to rush fraternities and sororities they were pretty much all single and done with the hs boyfriend by then. good luck, but i doint think it will last. out of sight, out of mind

I know two people who were MIDDLE SCHOOL sweethearts...one moved away, they lost touch, then by happenstance saw each other the first day of college - they happened to go to the same school in a completely different area from where they grew up or lived. They're still married after about 10 years.

Mine fell apart after 3 years. We made it through until our junior year in college, but by then with all the time apart we had lost the spark and we decided to end it as there was no point dragging it on. Although we are still good friends, so it wasn't a total bust.

I haven?t seen any work, and I think the odds are *not* in your favor, but I would still give it a try. Just be completely honest with your g/f about how you feel.

I was w/ my hs sweetheart for 6 years! College got the best of me... I couldn't hold out any longer and had to venture out. Not long after my 1 yr as a single guy, I met the perfect girl in college and am now engaged and as happy as can be!
