A laptop can be seen as a necessity due to its mobility and a student's need for
1) group work in varying places,
2) studying in varying places, and
3) traveling home at the end of the semester or for Thanksgiving or Easter break.

It quickly becomes tedious packing a desktop and monitor in the backseat of the car when driving home. Mobility is necessary and a laptop fits this requirement.

The need for a desktop becomes minimal when the new workstation laptops are considered.

If you wish for more storage than a laptop can carry, get an external hard drive and leave it in your room or locked up in your dorm. You will need more storage than is currently used, that is certain. If you want to work on a larger monitor and more comfortable keyboard, then get those and leave them in your room also. These things easily hook up to a laptop. I think a desktop machine is necessary only if you need the processing power or the experience configuring a server, which only an engineering student may need.

i find that 95% of people at college who have laptops, use it as a desktop. they never take it off their desk. ive never seen a single person bring a laptop to class....waste of money for most people IMO

I have both, but I don't take the laptop to class, because I don't have a use for it (besides neffing AT).

ok so the main reasons ive found is that there is more processing power for cheaper, most people end up using laptops as desktops, end up surfing the net in the middle of a lecture which can be good

I recently graduated, so i feel i can comment here LOL.

I had a desktop and laptop. The desktop ofcourse stayed in the room all the time even over breaks. The laptop was usually carried with me to class or to the quad for working on the wifi. I used my desktop for main storage and had everything set up so i could use my laptop to work on the desktop for file xfer.

The desktop was mainly for play. it was for games, movies, music. The laptop was the accutly work/study-horse.

Comp Sci Engineering = 3 desktops + 2 laptops at my house for repair.

the 3 desktops are mine.
1 my media rig (see sig)
2 my mule (working ever so diligently for me)
3 my wife's old celly. (hehe I ride pentiums,she's on a celly)

2 laptops are both infected with viri+adware, in the process of formating/cleaning for my non-geek friends.

I'd love to have a notebook, but I cant justify the expense when I consider how much I could do with the same amount of cash in a big box.

I see my self in a laptop running $1600-2000. I could be screaming "dual core processors" for less. then again soending that much would be a huge waste. the system I have now (in sig) was close to $1K + alot of extras after the fact (+ a small RAID0 setup : )

I really do dig laptops, but they are a really good at dying young, since they cant be upgraded. for example: one laptop I recently fixed had a dead hard drive. If it were a desktop I could throw in a new one in about 5 minutes and spend the next half hour installing windows and a few more hours setting it up with software and updates. but NOOO, it was a notebook. I had to crack the case (not literally) then take apart the screen to detach it, then actually take off the keyboard to get the a cartridge holding the hard drive. then it wouldnt recognise the CD-ROM, so if was forced to floppy boot (which took 6 flopps). and you know I didnt have more than a couple dinosaur disks hanging around...

I guess I'm just to poor to own a laptop.
