I chose 4-5 because I have discovered that I am incapable of sleeping for less than 4 hours. I'll sleep through the alarm every time. Seriously, I've attepted it multiple times through my life, and every time I go to bed with my alarm set for less than 4 hours away, it will not wake me up. It's the primary reason I never take naps. They have to be at least 4 hours, and that's too long for a nap.

Other than that I'm equally tired no matter how long I sleep.

Sleep window & number of hours slept is a combination that I need.

My sleep window (the time at night when I get sleepy) is about 20 minutes between 8:20pm to 8:40pm. I need to be in bed about 20 minutes before that so that when I get sleepy, I'm already wound down & can just zonk off. So my preferred bedtime routine starts at 7:45pm...brush my teeth etc. & then get into bed & turn out the lights. It stinks that it's that early, but that's just how it is for my body.

Then I only need roughly 7 hours of sleep. Latest I wake up naturally (no alarm) is typically by 4am. I feel AWESOME if I nail those two things: hit my target bedtime & get 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Lately I've had a highly variable evening schedule tho

Wow I can't imagine getting up at 4am, let alone without an alarm. Easier to go to bed at that time.

I've actually done the mistake of listening to my sleep window and going to bed early even if I don't work the next morning, with the thought that I'll get up earlier and get more done. Never works. Just end up sleeping a ridiculous amount of hours.

Even after 8 hours I've slept through my alarm a few times. It's totally random when it happens. It happened to me recently, I don't even remember turning it off. My boss calling my cell is what ended up waking me up, it was already like 8:20 by that time, was suppose to be in for 8:00. Oops. There was another coworker who did not even show up for several shifts in a row so my boss wanted to talk to him that morning, he never showed up for that shift either. So my boss jokingly gave me hell and is like "you're off the hook".

I work shifts, so I tend to ask to get more night shifts, don't have the problem of needing an alarm or having to get up early.

I've been getting 6 recently and I'm at home everyday - I tell myself I can just nap when I need it, but I end up working through anyway. I just can't shut myself down in the middle of the day.

Really does not matter what time I go to bed. Dawn is when I wake up. Most nights get sleepy around 10-11pm. Now that daylight is compressing I will want to sleep more.

I usually get 4 a night. Or less. Insomnia sucks. Its been going on long enough that my doc has suggested meds (Ambien, Lunesta, etc.), but I'm not a big fan of screwing with my brain chemistry. Particularly as the lack of sleep does not seem to affect me much. Well, every so often I have a day when I crash for 12 hours straight. But those days are few and far between.

It's highly variable for me and I suspect it's the same for most people even if they don't realize it. The outcome is subject to so many variables - what you ate, the physical activity you underwent, any events/stresses of the day, what else you may have ingested, drugs, caffeine, alcohol, whatever - the list goes on and on. Under ideal circumstances, I'm OK with >6 hours. I feel like 7 is the best general number for most scenarios. It's rare that I can get a good night uninterrupted sleep for more than 6-7 hours. If I get less than 6 hours, it's rare that I will feel good about it. Drag my feet, groggy and irritable, feel like a bag of shit if I've been drinking and don't get much sleep. Most of the time I will feel pretty good towards the second half of the day, mostly recovered. Unless I was a real idiot the night before, or if I really just barely slept. Today is a good example actually... I drank a little too much last night, only slept 5ish hours, beginning of the day sucked. But I still managed to go for a jog this evening, and I did better than all of my previous jogs over the past few weeks (just started exercising again); so I couldn't have been *that* fucked over by the lack of sleep. I feel like tonight will be a good night's sleep though!

My ideal day would be six hours of straight sleep, and a few naps throughout the day. Since I have to deal with other people, I like about nine hours of straight sleep. Eight works, but less than that, I'm tired.

Up 05:30 and back from work about 6 pm, plus another hour to cook, eat and get cleaned up.
That leaves 10.5 hours for a social life and sleeping.
I may have to rethink the amount of time I spend viewing ATOT
