Poll: How was it to upgrade from 128 to 256+ mb ram under W2K?

What did it change? Bootup times, application loading times, gaming perfomance etc.

Was it worth it?

Ram prices are low

I didn't see a lot change in speed booting etc.

However, I do see a very large improvement when working with large files and multitasking. I would say that it is well worth it with win2k.

Big change in Apps like Adobe and 3D Max. Also in most games... Well worth it.

Boot up is mainly dependent on your hard drive speed.

But once W2K is loaded 256Mb is well worth the money.

I agree with the others. I did notice a slight improvement in boot-up but
really noticed the multitasking & gaming improvements. FWIW, I did not get
the same results when going from 256 to 384. I think 256 is W2K Pro's sweet
spot.

HUGE difference going form 128 to 256. better performance everywhere, except bootup. also the upgrade from 256-512 was also extremely noticable, much more than i anticipated.

I upgraded from 192 --> 320 --> 576. The 192 to 320 jump was noticeable all around, in everything. The jump to 576 I only really notice when running things like photoshop and illustrator. Day to day web surfing and whatnot the jump to 576 isn't too noticeable. I just purchased the extra 256 because tcwo has 256MB PC100 Micron for $123.

128 to 256... DO IT.

You will see a difference. I played Diablo II and it froze every little bit but after going to 256 it never happened again.

Well worth money with the memory prices now.

Using Whistler Pro Beta 1, and i just upgraded to 256MB all of 2days 13hours 28minutes and 34seconds ago (hmmm, gotta love the reliability and uptime of it ). All i can say is that it just ROCKS. There is a very noticable difference, because it almost never swaps now whereas beforehand it was crunching the hard drive to death whenever I got into some relatively normal multitasking. Games show quite a difference too, in both load time and initial frame rates.

Go get yourself some ram, NOW !

EDIT: Typos, and " 2days 13hours 32minutes and 19 seconds "
hehehe.

NT or Win2k.... they all love their RAM! Very noticeable.. keeps your PC from disk thrashing too.

ram's cheap now. so the upgrade to 256 shouldn't even be a question.
but going for more than that...i don't know. although ram is cheap, it's not cheap enough to justify the close to none performance increase.
ultimately, it is up to you though.

If your running win2k when you go from 128 to 256 you'll see the different. Not in booting up but in your app. there a big change. I could tell so much that I when on to 384Mb of memory.

There isn't a such a speedup in W9x because W9x doesn't need a lot of memory. Besides that they aren't very good at memory handling.

robg1701, or anyone else using the Whistler beta, is 256MB going to be the sweet spot for that as well or would more be optimum?

You can see my previous post for what im on about, but id just like to say im happy with my new record:

" 6days 11hours 16minutes 15seconds "

DAMN what a sweet OS. Oh, and how interesting it is that my uptime record comes on the most (VERY) heavily used period ive put it through, and the boot straight after i installed another 128MB of ram

Mooncalf,

Sorry, i must have missed your post somehow. I would say that 256MB is probably going to be the sweet spot for whistler as well, yes. I know 128MB is not giving any win2k varient/descendent enough room to breathe, but going to 256MB in whistler has been like a breath of fresh air. It has some little intricacies it has at this early stage with quite high mem usuage, so i can only really see the situation improving or holding steady as current mem usuage is loweded and other features added. Obviously going higher than 256MB will help, but as with win2k i think that it going to be a much diminished return. Side note - 3D animators, and people who leave games minimsed not included

I just upgraded to the system below from a P3-450@600 (2.05V) with 128MB of RAM under Win98. The difference is unbelievable - partially due to the RAM + NT5, and also the processor and HDD My old Maxtor 10GB 7200RPM, while nice, is nothing compared to this drive.
