I do. When Q1 came out, the default was inverted so I stuck with it.

That's how it started for me as well. Just got used to it over hours and hours of Quake, and now I feel lost if it's not inverted.

THANK YOU!

I was wondering why the hell I ever started inverting, and it MUST have been when Q1 came out... i can't play w/o it inverted now

Have always played inverted.

Its intuative. Its how the body works and more natural.

somebody find out how many "pros" use it inverted. One would think it would be a pretty high percentage.

wha?? Explain please.

when you look down you tilt your head/body forward.

when you look up you tilt your head/body backward.

You hit the nail on the head! You are not moving the mouse up and down when you play, but rather forward and backward...

I don't know though, these non-inverties might still not get it...

In Doom you couldn't look up/down. That was part of the challenge in using the BFG or the Rocket Launcher in Doom. They both did HUGE collateral damage, but you couldn't take advantage of it like in Quake, because you couldn't aim at people's legs so if you missed it would hit the floor and still do quite a bit of damage.

Descent and Quake were what started it with me.

Inverted. I have heard of the head explanation before, but "You are not moving the mouse up and down when you play, but rather forward and backward... " is a rather eloquent way of explaining our so -called "weirdness" as well. These explanations usually aren't meant to sway anyone's personal choice, just explain where we inverts are coming from. All that matters is what you are used to. Nothing gay about it. If I try to play non-inverted my head will probably explode, there is no going back. It is monumentally frustrating to try and switch. So we all keep doing our thing.

With that being the plain truth, and it originating from the old school, I hardly think it should be that shocking or meant to imply homosexuality. Only weirdos are those using the right mouse button to move forward! What the hell are you guys thinking! lol... just messing.

I don't think I could ever get used to inverted, it just seems unnatural to me. I only started using mouselook back in the Quake2 days though, and it took me a while to get used to that

Edit: I could see using inverted controls like on a joystick in flight games though, I used to play Terminal Velocity like that almost ten years ago Seems completely different for a mouse and FPS games though.

Yeah, it's always made more sense to me. Kinda like flying a plane or something. Back means you're tilting your head back, thus looking up....and vice versa.

And yeah, started with defaults in Q1 have set me for life.

...I almost always also have switch space and shift. Shift = jump, space = crouch.

Yea i invert my mouse : it just not normal not too (for me). I guess all those flight sims i played as kid.

What's odd though is in World of Warcraft there is an option to invert mouse and it completely throws me on a trip. My friend who also plays FPS's inverted can't stand playing WoW non inverted.

What sucks though is having a custom key config that the above buddy gave me when we started playing unreal tourny back in the day. That's the only way i can play most FPS's now.. which sucks since that guarantees that everytime i install a game i'm going to spend several minutes in the config to figure out my settings

Yup, always inverted, I can't play the game otherwise. Then again I also use the right mouse button to move forward, which people think is really strange.

...man...inverted AND you use the right mouse button to move forward?? You got skillz dude...and you are also crazy!

That's the set up I had for Quake 1. Now that so many games have alt fires and what not my right mouse button is tied up for other things but from time to time I still use it to move forward. For a bit in Q1 my uparrow was jump and my right mouse was forward. Inverted ftw!

Truly crazy... Well it sure does depend on when you started pc gaming for sure. I started in early 1999 when Half Life 1 came out. I'm sure if I started pc gaming when Wolfenstein 3D came out or something things would be different.

My friend uses the mouse button forward and....'f' or space for fire...i think. Plays His reasoning was that using the left mouse button to fire made you prone to nervous twitching and thus being an inaccurate shot if you panicked at the exact wrong moment. You'd press the mouse button too hard and thus shift your aim and miss.

He plays inverted for the same reasons many of us do as well....it's body natural/the way it all began in Q1.

I thought I was the only one. I play all of my FPS with inverted mouse controls but when I try to do the same thing in WoW, it throws me for a loop and feels totally foreign. Weird thing is now that I've been playing WoW so much, it feels slightly off playing FPS with inverted controls.

True.

I think once you are used to one way you can never go back. I don't think one is better than the other, but inverted just seems more natural to the way the mind works.

I'm still interested in stats of tournament players. I hear some prefer a joystick for the right hand.

yea but your not moving your head with your mouse. Your moving your aiming your gun. Do you move your gun down to shoot upwards? No.

Why does anyone want his mouse inverted? It doesn't make any sense to me. To me it makes as much sense as taking the E key off your keyboard and switching it with the Q. WTF?

but you do move forward.

Much more similar to "real life" aiming and shooting.

Wow, more than I thought = 37 yes, 53 no. I've never ran across anyone else that inverts their mouse so I was sometimes supprised when they kept including it in games over the years.

It started for me because I played a lot of flight simulators on the PC back in the day. Jetfighter 1 and 2 were the coolest things to me back then. That microsoft flight simulator (which was popular to everyone else) was boring.. Who really wants to fly a slow passenger jet?

Anyhow, pull back = move nose up. Push forward = move nose down. Seems natural..

For flying, it makes sense since you're simulating a joystick. For FPS games it can go either way. Either you see it as a forward/backward motion (as if your head is the joystick) or a up/down motion (as if your mouse is sitting on top of the monitor). However, mouse's aren't meant to simulate joystick movement but point to parts of the screen, which makes the more common setup (non-inverted) more sensible.
