yea but your not moving your head with your mouse.
Yes you are.

Your moving your aiming your gun.
Clearly it isn't a gun view because when you use iron sights your gun moves, not your view. This is because your head is still in the same place but you've moved your gun up to eye level.

Why does anyone want his mouse inverted?
Look straight ahead and push your head forward with your hand. Where does you view go? Down towards your feet, just like it does in an inverted FPS.

What's odd though is in World of Warcraft there is an option to invert mouse and it completely throws me on a trip. My friend who also plays FPS's inverted can't stand playing WoW non inverted.

What sucks though is having a custom key config that the above buddy gave me when we started playing unreal tourny back in the day. That's the only way i can play most FPS's now.. which sucks since that guarantees that everytime i install a game i'm going to spend several minutes in the config to figure out my settings

I thought I was the only one. I play all of my FPS with inverted mouse controls but when I try to do the same thing in WoW, it throws me for a loop and feels totally foreign. Weird thing is now that I've been playing WoW so much, it feels slightly off playing FPS with inverted controls.

haha me too! i get owned so hard when i play CS:S or Unreal now. IT's kinda sad.. =

That does make perfect sense, however its just as "natural" not to have it inverted. Push up on your mouse and where does your cursor go? Up.

People should be able to realize that it is whatever floats your boat, which is why there has been an option to turn it on/off for as long as I can remember.

In a game though, the crosshair (cursor) does not move, instead it's sight that moves. That's why it's more "natural" to play with inverted.

I don't want to over analyze this but yes, you do move the BACK of the gun down, especially if you are a right handed shooter...ie. left hand to steady the muzzle and right hand on the stock. Look where the axis is when you aim up and down, your body leaning back to shoot up...etc.

Sure, in a 2D desktop. OTOH a 3D FPS is putting you inside a body which you directly control.

Same here, until a few months ago.
I've been re-training myself to play it standard and I've done pretty well.
It only took me a few days of clumsy movement and a lot of cieling/floor shooting, but non-inverted feels natural to me now, as well as inverted. I guess I'm just ambidextrous.

The head forward/backward logic doesn't follow through with the right and left mouse movement like it does with non-inverted logic, but I understand what you guys are saying. Am I incorrect in thinking that you guys would have been better off learning non-inverted FPS aiming in the beginning?

True, true...it doesnt really hold to say...just for the Y axis. You're right, it should be true for X and it isn't...so maybe the whole natural movement thing doesn't hold water.

I think it was a personal preference, based on previous gaming experience early on, that is locked now...hmmm..i'm obviously staing the obvious from other posts....

ouch. upside down HURTS. maybe on flying games though. but thats with a little stick on a controller. i stick to CS controls as much as possible. between splinter cell 1-3 they changed the layout of controls so much, so im glad i stuck to my conventional CS settings. i play alot of FPS so its helpful.

I think because looking right and left is more rotational than a tilt of the head, it's different, I could be mistaken though.

Act as if you're holding and aiming a gun and aim upwards. Do you not tilt your whole torso backwards?

I do. When Q1 came out, the default was inverted so I stuck with it.

That's how it started for me as well. Just got used to it over hours and hours of Quake, and now I feel lost if it's not inverted.

Amen. I am lost w/ no invert.

I used to only play exclusively by inverting my mouse and using the arrow keys. I'd been playing that way for years. A few months after HL2 came out, I switched to WASD and a non-inverted mouse. Pretty weird because I'd tried playing that way before and it just felt weird. Non-inverting seems to be nautral for me now.

This means I can pick up pretty much any FPS without much work, play at a friend's house, etc. It's easy to adapt to a conventional setup, so why not do it? I was smart enough to do it from the beginning. Defaults FTW.

FTW! It took me a long time to figure this out, but once I did, it made playing *so* much easier. Back in the FPS infancy, developers didn't really know which was the best way to play their game, so defaults were always iffy. But now, some actual thought and effort goes into the control scheme, so why fight it?

I wish I could play all games "au natural," but I can't survive in WoW without my mods!

no inverted mouse for me.
However, I use ,aoe instead of wasd for controls. Probably because I have a dvorak keyboard and ,aoe are where wads normally are.

Doesn't that game have it backwards? There's one game I play that I have to turn inverted off, since some genius decided to break the standard.

I used too. But I switched because I played with people who used non-inverted (when playing multiplayer or whatever), so I didn't have to bother going to the settings everytime I started.

i used to play inverted for everything. then i couldn't play computer games for like 3 months during summer, and when i booted up morrowind, i was like, "WTF? why's the mouse all screwy?" i checked... and inverted mouse WAS selected.

it's weird, but ever since that day i use normal mouse. weird...

Wow, I am very surprised by the poll results. I thought most people inverted.

Never occurred to me to ask why games are 'uninverted' by default.
