You have been in a trade war for over 40 years where the top 1% has been using foreign tax shelters, diminishing regulations, cheaper foreign workers, and illegals to move the wealth from the middle class to the upper class bypassing American living wages, retirement, healthcare, safety/environmental regulations, taxes, etc., that interfere with their profits while demanding the same American tax payer funded government protects their government chartered corporate rights when those same profits are threatened, like China with stolen Intellectual Property or dumping subsidized below cost goods, with tariffs or oil in the Mideast with trillion dollar shooting wars.
unfortunately most Americans have been too dumbed down to realize the long term costs to their economic well being as well as the environment because of the cheaper is better and always low prices mentality while at the same time they have been brainwashed that their own government is evil especially if they tax, subsidize or regulate any thing out there while countries like China don't think twice about subsidizing their own businesses, sacrificing their people and environment, or using tariffs in order to protect their markets while at the same time undercutting foreign competition.
Like a drug addict many Americans are addicted to consumerism, buying things they don't need with money they don't have living paycheck to paycheck with little to no savings so losing their cheap foreign made goods manufactured under conditions they themselves would refuse to work under will definitely feel like painful withdrawal, yet I have no more sympathy for them than Northerners who were against slavery with their mouth but enjoyed their Southern cheap slave goods when they had to reach in their pockets.
