One of my former students is majoring in film studies. Unless Siskel or Ebert die, I can't figure out what you would do with such a degree. "you'll study film history, theory, and criticism, as well as the basics of film production."

haha siskel's been dead for over a decade.

I love these threads. Just major in what you like. Then get out there and make the rest happen.

I love these threads. I doubled my income this year and am set to do the same this coming year. I'll be at 100k+ my 3rd year out of college. Majored in English and Political Science. Study what you want, then get out there and make it happen. Unless your an engineer. Then you sit at a desk and make what your boss tells you you're going to make and worry about getting outsourced to the infinitely more wise and infinitely cheaper Indians out there..

Yeah, somehow I don't believe you....

edit: Nice ninja edit BTW.

Liberal arts degrees are for the extremely wealth or the extremely stupid.

I think this is something only an uneducated person would say.

Anyhow I typically totally support whatever academic endeavor someone pursues. I think all academic pursuits add value to a person and to society at large. However I may have to look at this as the except to the rule. This degree looks like it is essentially graduated undeclared; is that possible? I would interpret it as a desire to not commit to anything nor developing any significant understand of any particular sphere of knowledge. Is this a joke?

I just didn't see the point in flaunting it. There are others out there just like me...don't worry...

Now, the 100k is hypothetical. Being in sales things can change for sure. But I'm already on that pace for January and Feb. So things are looking good!

Doing EE. Considering minoring in math (two more classes?) and English (it isn't too bad). Almost done with a business minor I picked up for filler classes. Wanted to do art, but I don't think they have a minor for it and if they did, no way I could compete with others in it.

Might take some mechanical engineering classes for shits and giggles. I'm required to take a few anyway.

The usefulness of it all? Just my EE classes, I doubt I'll use anything else I've learned directly. Just doing what I find interesting while I have the resources to do so.

I have a BS in Geology but have worked in IT my whole post college life. Still I don't consider it useless.

I'm from the other end of the spectrum. I didn't get a degree or even attempt college for that matter. I'm pretty sure that I'm an above average worker, love to work hard, learn new things very easily...but there are a lot of jobs that won't even let me apply since I don't have a degree.

Basically I have to work harder than someone that has a degree to earn nearly the same money.

i have a BA. i forget what it's for. it's not too hard to carry around. i think work hired me because i had a degree, and i'm positive they had no idea what it was in.

You and about 99.45% of all other people with 4 year degrees. *shrug*

I think you underestimate the uselessness of your degree. I honestly can't think of any degree that would be more useless. So I'm going to say that 99.9999999999% of everyone else with a 4 year degree has one that is more useful.

A lot of other degrees might not translate directly to specific job skills, but that doesnt' mean they are completely useless. Getting a 4 year degree in English, Psych, History, etc. at least means that you've gained some high level of knowledge in a certain area. And you can certainly see how that knowledge could be beneficial in your life, even if it doesn't lead directly to a job in the same field.

But a degree in Elective Studies tells people that you have no particular interest in any particular field or the ability or desire to commit to anything.

My first degree was pretty useless in terms of finding a job. BS in General Science with emphasis in Psychology and Chemistry. Not enough focus on any one science to get a job in the field. But the classes I took gave me a pretty broad understanding of scientific principles and logic.

My second degree was a lot more valuable financially. BS in Computer Science.

I just saw that 3 people picked "My 4 year degree is more useless". Unless these 3 people all have a Bachelors of Stupidity, I don't see how that's possible.
Anyone?

like my brother who got a geology degree when things turned for the worse and couldn't get into his chosen field at the time, ended up driving tour buses and dump trucks.

Hah there was website referenced in one of the global warming threads that said that geology was a good field to go into. I think it was posted by Craig if anyone wants to look for it. But seriously, I thought at the very least Geology could help get a GIS job or something with surveying.

I don't see how that qualifies it as MORE useless than a degree in elective studies.

yea, I don't understand this either - why earn a useless degree? It cracks me up when people major in english, music, history, etc and then complain about not being able to find a good job.
