Damn I'm a geek. Picked up 1000' of BerkTek Plenum for $50 on E*bay so I went hogwild. 2 jacks in my NOC (AKA the study), 2 in the living room for when friends stop over, 2 in the master bedroom, 1 in the guest bedroom, one in the kitchen, and one in the dining room. It was mostly for practice and the landlord is happy that the value of the place went up. I made sure it was ok in writing first of course. Now I'm starting to go wireless so which mean I can post on the crapper too.

This is another issue with buying a house. I would like my office (when built), kitchen, family room and bedrooms upstairs to be wired.

Another addition to the list.

We retrofitted our house w/ RG-58 then CAT-5 (there's still an RG-58 cable in a wall). I'm an electronic tech and my dad's a retired phone worker, our house is probably at the point where the FCC are going to do an investigation

yeah baby my house wired! i must have 6 or 7 hundred feet running underneath the floor. the router is in my room, and ive got 3 100' cables running to my dads, moms, and sisters computer. then in my room, ive got it under my carpet to my few computers...and about 100' to spare in various lengths..50', 25', 10', and so on.

its simple...just make sure you buy enough =) i didnt the first time, and i had to get an rj45 (connection type of cat5) connector to connect 2 pieces of cat5

soon im going to be upgrading to cat5e..rated at 10x faster than cat5...good for lan games =)

IN an apartment now, stuffed the cable modem, router and hub all under my roomates bed along with my Win2k webserver. He doesnt understand why theres so much junk stuffed under his bed but he likes the fact he can use his computer whenever and its fast for surfing the web. The cables run through the hallway, have them duct taped down near doors to prevent tripping. Getting a house in August, I'll probably wire that puppy up nice.

Don't even get me started about horrible crawlspaces and network installs. I spent 3 hours in the worlds worst crawlspace (very little clearance, and 2.1 inch nails protruding through the floor all over the place) While working on a network installation for a lawyers office. And it was hot as hell. I spent a lot of time drilling holes up through the floor, trying to get them in the right place without visual reference, relying on someone tapping on the floor above me to guide my drill bit. It was sheer hell...

Back on topic, my apartment isn't "wired" with cat5, we have it laying about all over the floor in the hall between bedrooms. Oh well... <grin>

Wired my house at school but I'm lazy so I have about 250 ft. of CAT5 cable hanging out windows going outside the house and draped over gutters etc...You could say it is pretty sloppy work but it gets the job done!

Have a few rooms wired now, 2 of them are together so its just patch cables and the other goes through a hole in the wall orignally from a cable guy so we didn't have to rip anything up.

Heheh, how many of you have CAT-5e? Am I the only one? Well, OK, I only have about 1 foot of CAT-5e.

It's set up between the master bedroom and my home office (where my router is). I put a jack on each side. It's not ideal though, because I can't find a patch cable with a 90 degree connector at one end. If I had that it would be ideal, because then the cable would sit flush with the wall. I guess I'll go shopping to see if those 90 degree connectors exist.

The rest of the house (4 phone jacks) is wired up using 10 Mbps HomePNA.

Mine is all Cat5e, and I have two extra 1000 foot rolls (well, one of them is a couple hundred feet short because I've been using it). Of course, mine isn't the only place I've wired, or will be wiring.

I plan to PIMP my new house with more cables than you could shake a fist at.

From a central wiring closet (droool!), at least two RG-6 runs to each room, Cat5e throughout, audio speaker wires, regular phone lines (or use of additional cat5 lines), and conduit to pull future fiber runs.

What do you think the ideal set-up is? Cable is cheap to run when I'm in the framing stage.

I just purchased some Belkin 100ft CAT5e cables and ran them through the cold air ventilation ducts to various rooms.

Stealth, that's a good idea. My house is old so has no Cat5 throughout unfortunately. I was thinking about somehow using coax which goes to each room if that's possible.

I have four computers on my home network. One is the internet gateway/print server/file server which sits in the basement. The modem plugs directly into the telephone company's network interface box for the fastest possible connect speed out here in the middle of no where. lol

37.7! Hey, I did connect 40.0 the first time I hooked it up.. Its a USR PCI Performance Pro 56K.

you guys are killing me with these dial-up horror stories. For a network, I guess everything is fine, but I can't imagine sharing a dial-up.

There's 50' of Cat5 cable running from my home office to the wife's home office. I drilled a hole in the floor at my end and dropped the cable in. Then I crabbed along on my back in the crawlspace underneath the house, and brought it up through a hole in the floor at her end. (The things one does to preserve matrimonial bliss!)
