I don't know if this will be allowed, but what the hey.
ISO hot deal on a good shave
What is the best shaving equipment you've used? (Price no object)
What else have you used? How does it compare?
Looking for both manual and electric reviews.

I just shaved for the first time in 15 years. I have a thick beard and sensitive skin.

I used a Gellette Atra twin blade for the first few days. It was close enough but got some nicks. I find manual razors require a great deal of concentration (at 7:00 AM) to be safe.

For the last few days I have been using a Norelco 3 head electric. It takes just as long, if not longer than the Atra. It still irritates my face as much, or more, than the Atra. (Instructions say give it 20 days for your face to adjust. WTF? Exactly how is my face going to adjust?) But, no risk of cuts. Therefore requires less concentration. It is closer than I expected. Close enough to last me through the day. Not as close as the Atra though.

Any other opinions?

Although this may not be the correct forum for such things, I feel his pain as far as shaving being a a nightmare (I too have thick facial hair and extremely sensitive skin) and I will give a few pointers.

As far as blades are concerned, I've tried about half on the market and the only one worth using is the Mach3. Yes, it is the most expensive, but it is by far the best. You can get a slightly closer shave from a Sensor or Sensor Excel, but in terms of irritation, the Mach3 is the best. Be warned, they go for as much as $1.80 a blade at the drugstore, so try to find an online deal for 'em.

Now most people don't really give a whole lot of thought as to the shaving cream they are using, but I can assure you, it can make all the difference.

As far as drugstore brands go, the best is the new Nivea line of shaving gels. They just came out recently and not all places carry it, but they are worth looking for, and they're only like a dime more expensive per can over the other gels on the market. I would also recommend their aftershaves as well, they don't dry out your face and do a good job soothing. Outside of that, the Edge Gels aren't bad, but if you can find the Nivea stuff, buy it.

Now if you are willing to spend a little extra, I cannot recommend the King of Shave line of products enough. (www.shave.com, yes they have a free sample but it'll take up to a few months to get it). It's not horrendously expensive, from like 5-9 bucks per item, and they last a decent while (Probably 60-100 shaves depending on what you're buying). The shave oils are the best if you have dry skin, but if you're skin is normal go for the Kenexium Shave Gel....that stuff is by far the best shaving product I've ever found in terms of eliminating irritation. Some Target stores carry the King of Shaves line, but they don't carry the full line, just the low end. The Kenexium Shave Oil is the best oil, the Kenexium Shave Gel is the best gel (menthol or non...just a preference thing. Personally can't stand that facial freezing), and if you get a chance try their after shave balm...top notch stuff.

Well, that's about it, I suppose.

i know anandtechers need to shave too, but this is as way off topic as it gets
putting it on the off topic forum should be more appropriate

I shave with an Aloe shaving cream, a Mach III, and an aftershave gel with aloe because I have sensitive skin. Oh by the way, this belongs in the Off Topic forum

Hmmm...I'd like to get an electric razor someday...but $100 for a toiletry item? Come now...

Can you imagine paying $100 for a toothbrush or a comb or something? Oh well...maybe I'll find a cheap Taiwanese knockoff or something.

Bombrman, if you find a good electric that you'll use all the time, $100 isn't that much. I figure I spend that much in a year for blades and shaving gel.

GunNut, discussing the locking of a thread often gets childish, with people posting repetitive things such as "I feel a lock coming". It also can serve a useful purpose by reminding people that the proper subject for posts in this forum is "Hot Deals". There are several different forums available including the "Off Topic" one, where this post should have been made. This serves both the poster and the readers. The individual posting this thread is more likely to get respondents interested in his/her post and the readers in the Hot Deals forums don't have to waste their time with a subject they're not interested in. Yes it only takes a second to read the subject and decide you're not interested, but unfortunately it takes enough time as it is to find the real hot deals without skipping over all the threads that shouldn't have been posted in this forum to begin with.

$.02,
D.

B0mberman - buy a real-cheapo and you'll deal with louder buzzing near your ear and more pulling on those whiskers, in short, less comfort for something that you do every day or twice a day. Just the noise alone would be worth buying a more expensive quieter unit. Often out of mfrs' product line, find the high-end or middle-range unit, then look at the less-frilly versions of the same model, and that may be the best buy.

This really isn't the place for this post -- but since the admins just refuse to create a I WANNA **FORUM** instead of the totally useless thread, I'll answer anyhow.

<< (Instructions say give it 20 days for your face to adjust. WTF? Exactly how is my face going to adjust?) >>

I use the same one, the one you can use in water. Has little dispensors of a gel that you pump out in it. Norelco Advantage I think it's called.

And yes, you do need to give your face 20 days or so to adjust. Shaving with a razor is not the same as using a electric. Your face is not used to it... hard to explain. But I went through it, the first 2 weeks was unfun. It looked like army ants attacked me every morning. But now I will *not* switch from this razor unless someone comes out with a totally razorless solution to shaving.

Anyhow I love the thing. Best shave you can buy IMO. Just give it the 20 days.

First, thanks MODS for not locking this.

Second, thanks Meppen, b0mbrman, Danzilla, claffeyb, and dirkdaring (hope I got everybody) for your comments. They were very useful.

Third, for the rest of you bums a big Bronx cheer. This was created as a POLL, NOT a regular thread. If I had a deal I would have put it in a regular thread. If the mods wanted to lock this they could have, and still can. If you are not interested in this then just go away.

I've used an older (non-reflex) triple-head Norelco (~1yr), 2-head Panasonic (~1yr), and 3-head Panasonic (~6mo). I have to say that the 3-head Panasonic is by far the best.

The Norelco was OK, but I had trouble shaving underneath my chin. The 2-headed Panasonic was better at that, was waterproof, and still gave a pretty close shave. Only problem was, it would bend instead of cut longer hairs.

The 3-head Panasonic is the best, as it added a third head which was made for clipping off those longer hairs. Works well wet or dry -- Wet (w/lather) gives a closer shave, dry is more convenient for me.

I got mine at Overstock.com, where the model I have is $54.95. It's reconditioned, which means they disinfect it and give it a new set of blades so it's pretty much like new.

I have a Panasonic Linear wet/dry shaver. It gives a good close shave but it gets annoying at times to have to turn the shaver this way or that way to get some hairs. Personally I wish there was something I could slap on my face (without fear of it burning my eyes out or something) that would make the hair not grow for a few weeks.
Too bad male pattern baldness only affects hair on the top of the head and not facial hair.

I, myself, look forward to posts like this.....

I have read some of the funniest sh!t on this board when people post replies to off the wall messages. I agree, that it gets pretty damn sad that people keep saying lock this and lock that, but how else would they have become the super duper platnium diamond members they are. I wish there was a way to track some of these peoples posts... Because I swear I see the same damn names next to the "here comes the lock down" comments. Anywho, I like Nivea too and the MACH 3... still wish I didnt have to shave... and for electric, they all suck if you have a delicate kisser... I bought some 160 panasonic shaver... Well, lets just say I utilized the 30-day rental policy on that one from Best Buy.

Regards,

noodle

I've been looking for a good shave as well. I'm currently on the MACH 3 bandwagon, but I'd like to switch the Braun or Norelco razor. I'm still skeptical, b/c of my past experiences with electric shavers. But I've read several reviews on Epinions in favor of those two brands.

Anyway, maybe I could go for the "rental" plan as well. That's a big investment.

For non-electric razor, I vote for the Mach 3 also.

For electric razors, I have a Panasonic Linear ES8068 wet/dry shaver. It's by far the best electric I've used. Using it wet gives me the closest and least irritating shaves. Only drawback is it's cost...but for me it was well worth the extra $$$.

As for the rude self-annointed Mods around here...they should know their roles, shut their mouths, and let the Mods do the moderating. We can all voice our opinions here without acting like d*cks to each other.
