Did my undergrad in NYC, doing my graduate study in LA......
Lived in Manhattan (village) for 3 years, and right now is my 3rd year in Westwood......

can't decide. When I was in New York, I missed the west coast so much. Miss being able to drive, miss the weahter, miss the beaches. I was annoyed by sharing the small apartment with 3 other roommates and still paying rediculous rent, had to walk to take the bus or subway then transfer and transfer and walk and walk and the dog poop on the yellow snow on the sidewalk during the winter doesn't make the walk very pleasant..... I had to give up my favorite high heels because walking was my destiny...... not to mention moving from dorm to dorm with all my properties in a little pushing cart...... cabs do not stop for movers so me and my friends had to push the cart across 13 streets and 2 avenues at 108 degree in the summer..... it's not easy to live in New York, especially being a student with little income. Therefore I moved to LA for graduate school. Perfect weather, slower pace. I drove everywhere with everything i need in the car. High heels, skirts, tan tops, no more walking on snow for half an hour just to do grocery shopping. It takes 10 minutes from my apartment to the beach, and after school i could always drive there, park, change in the car, pull out my beach mat from the trunk and just relax. But guess what? I miss New York. I miss the night life, the museums, the shows, the culture, the center of everything. I miss the big christmas tree in front of Rockefeller Center, the shopping atmosphere on 5th Ave, the museums, time square, SOHO, central park....... lots of unique things that makes it the one and only New York City. I like to be able to sit indoor holding a cup of hot coffee and just watch it snows peacefully.
Now I am thinking to move back for my next degree or postdoc...... but can I ever stand anywhere else after comfortable LA?

Red, once again I find myself in agreement with you. Those are my 5 favorite cities in the US as well. Of course, I'd swap SF and NO's positions on the list because I'm from NO.

I say SF! But it's not on there....? I haven't been to Boston or Chicago, but as of now, I think SF has the 2nd most dense "big city feel" with Manhattan at #1 of course. Nice skyline at SF. LA is just tons and tons of burbs with a not-so-big downtown where the 101 and the I-5 meet.

Exactly...LA is nothing but sprawl. Houston is the only city that's worse.

Southern California people dont' even think or talk about Northern California. I'm amazed why our fellows up North seem to loath the South so much. Maybe because we jack their water?
But then again, we all jack Colorado's water and such collectively.

I pick NYC even though I've never been there. I can't imagine why anyone would want to visit the City of LA. Unless you're a Korean and want to hang out w/ your fellow Korean wannabe gangsters in K-Town... City of LA is ghetto - dirty and dangerous.

I've been to both, and NYC is a much nicer city than LA. That said, San Francisco is nicer than both of them.

I think Northern California is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth.I'm a Bostonian and I loved San Francisco and also loved what I saw of San Jose and the Bay area.Southern Cali? it was pretty to visit but I don't think I'd want to live forever in a place like LA or San Diego. If I win the lottery it'll be northern Cali for me

The weather, no comparison!! NYC doesn't just suck in winter, it sucks in summer also! Hot and humid...no, I will take hot and dry anyday in LA

Ignorance sure abounds.

As for those avoiding the city of L.A. because it's 'ghetto' & 'dangerous' (bars on a house--WHAT?! OHNOES!!1), you're all wusses.

...and you also happen to be missing out on some of the best Latin American food on the planet in Rampart/Pico-Union, Westlake and Boyle Heights. Not to mention the jazz clubs in Leimert Park, LACMA on Wilshire, the ton of tiny playhouses churning out good entertainment in NoHo, MOCA and the brand new Disney Concert Hall downtown, a unique and up-and-coming arts scene in Chinatown, high fashion on the cheap (straight from the designers and factories) in Downtown's Fashion/Garment District (largest in the U.S.), fun & affordable X-Mas shopping in the Toy/Warehouse District (also largest in U.S.), or browsing for flowers or a ring for your mate in the nation's largest Flower District and 2nd largest Jewelry District (hmmm... also downtown), among countless other things to be seen and done in the city.

Wow, downtown's pretty happening and active for a 'not-so-big downtown' or for a city which apparently 'is nothing but sprawl.' Just a hint of what's going on and a better peek inside the resurgence of L.A.'s genuine center.

Sorry to burst some bubbles here. Lesson here: get off the freeway, get out of the car and begin exploring a city's nooks and crannies, its neighborhoods and its people (I guess this only applies to folks with any cojones)--don't be a sheep. If you bother to scratch at all below the surface and look for yourself, L.A. is plenty more (positive) than just pleasant year-round weather and amusement parks.

NYC I withold comment on as I've never been (something many in this thread could stand to do with both cities), but I'd love to visit.

So you're telling me that there aren't miles and miles of suburban hell around LA? I'll admit, I haven't spent a lot of time in Downtown LA, but I have been there enough to form an opinion of it, and my opinioin is it sucks.

L.A., but this is like having to choose between the 8-th & 9-th circles of hell.
