Both KDE and GNOME have made some big improvements since last time noticed one of these polls here.
Out of curiosity, what do you see as the big GNOME improvements? I've always been a GNOME fan, but the last AT poll I recall was probably early in GNOME 2.2, and I don't see anything huge separating 2.2 from 2.4.

Not debating or anything - I just find it interesting how everyone has their own little deciding factors in evaluating desktops.

edit: Oh, yeah... while I'm at it, if y'all haven't checked out XFCE4, you really should. I just finished setting it up on my laptop from work - 1GHz Celeron w/256MB of PC133 and crappy video. GNOME worked, but felt a bit too sluggish. XFCE4, however, is sweet. Much nicer than the old version, IMO.

Big gnome improvement: Nautilus is actually usable as a file manager now.

I don't use kde or any qt applications other than k3b because whenever I launch them from a terminal they give me a Mutex Destroy Failure: Device or Resource busy error after I close it. I don't really think errors of this nature should be occuring on such a large scale. On the other hand, kde3 is also fast and very feature rich (most of which I never use). Konquerer beats Nautilus on usability anyday in my book, except for the qt problems I have.

My current desktop is Gnome + xfwm4. Metacity sucks, especally w/Gnome 2.4.1 with gentoo. It can't focus on the destop, plus xfwm4 kicks its ass feature-wise anyway. I wish I could get it to integrate a little more seamlessly though.

For small scale application developers who doesn't want to open their source code, it make sense not to use Qt, as its license fees are very high.

KDE, but with all those nifty Gnome screensavers added. Don't think my opinion counts much tho...XP/2k3 is my OS o' choice.

"without QT" was pretty vague. It sounded like you were asking if kdevelop would work without QT installed.

I can't imagine that kdevelop demands you write only QT apps in it.

Qt is a great toolbox, but yeah, it is damned expensive for non-free or non-linux stuff.

Gentoo with kahakai WM, and GNOME apps. GTK1 and QT are both avoided to the best of my ability.

GNOME ROCKS.

I am still confused! So, are there other options for Linux GUI elements other than Qt? Can we develop GUI applications using KDevelop but without using Qt?

The KDevelop gui itself requires QT. To install and run KDevelop, you will need QT installed.
