I ripped a few new purchases to .ogg and have to say it sounds pretty good. I daresay better than mp3, and though I'm no audiophile, I don't think it's just my imagination... it just seems to have a more open sound and not blur drumbeats the way mp3s can.

I thought .ogg was just a wrapper for a standard (mpeg layer 3) file ..
have things changed, or am I mis-remembering?

I always thought ogg was better quality than mp3 but not as widely supported.

ogg is a wrapper, vorbis is the codec. vorbis is a superior codec to MP3 in all the review's I've seen. Note that vorbis doesn't have to be used in conjuction with an ogg wrapper, it can be streamed, for example.

who cares? MP3 is the standard.

The OP didnt specifically ask for which of the two formats was better. Else I would have posted my usual "just because its a standard doesn't mean it it the best" talk...
from personal experience / reviews/ opinions of others I have discussed with, .ogg is better. (I am not a qualified sound engineer or an authority on the subject, though!)

Ogg vorbis is far more useful. You can encode subtitles, multiple levels of audio, and video.

I never really heard much difference in the two, but I don't have an awesome sound setup.

definetely ogg. I don't like the quality of mp3's. Also one thing to keep in mind is the sampling size, and bit rate. If you vary and play with these two settings you can change the size of your ogg file.

Good luck,

when the industry decides to make ogg vorbis players, car decks, and throw support in for dvd players, and home theater players, i will switch. for now, i use mp3 320k cbr.

I believe that in general, OGG is superior at low (under 192kbps) bitrates, but they gradually even out above that.

Many choose mp3 because of the increased compatibility.

It all sounds the same to me.

Although, back in the day, I thought 128k MP3 was par with CD quality. After a few months of 192k MP3, I noticed a subtle decrease in audio fidelity between 128k and 192k- nothing major though. For me, MP3's universal compatibility and acceptable audio fidelity make it preferred to ogg-vorbis.

i dunno, inever believed the 128k was cd quality bit. even on lousy equipment you can just tell. a certain digitized quality with obvious artifacts marks 128k. 160+ ...that gets into the fuzzy hard to tell area, but 128 was always sh*t.

ditto, you took the line out of mouth

i definitely do not have golden ears but can clearly tell the blaring difference between my own LAME extreme mp3s and FLACs. in the meanwhile my roomate on klipsch and audigy says he cant tell the difference.. has to do with associated gear as well imo.

Actually, I ripped a CD with WMP and stuck it on a CD (as a wma) for my Stereo to play (it does mp3 and wma CD's), and the wma copy of an album actually sounded better than the CD version :/
My stereo does lack equaliser settings though, it has crappy presets only.
