POLL: Norton AntiVirus vs Mcafee Antivirus ... which one to get?

Both are rated 5 stars on PC magazine, but Norton was the editor's choice. Which one do you guys prefer?

i had problems uninstalling norton and the computers at home run McAfee. I prefer McAfee more than i do Norton.

I like Norton because it can clean viruses better. Most of the large companies (Fortune 500) are using Norton. Even the Federal government.

I definitely agree, and McAfee hogs your system as well. AVG is good. I use ETrust EZ Antivirus which is very good (it used to be Innoculate). AVG has a free edition; EZ Antivirus costs $24.95 for a one-year subscription and @ $19 each year after for renewals - and neither one hogs your system!

Same here...the last two versions of systemworks has been alot less aggressive in taking over your system. That was my main bitch about Norton but now I like it alot and believe it is a great tool which extends the life of my OS between reloads.

That's really only a problem nowadays if the computer is old and slow. Most of the current 1Ghz+ systems with 512mb or more of DDR or SDR won't even be bothered by it.

IMO, CPU usage is pretty much a non issue nowadays with a decently fast system.

I do have a fast system (2.5ghz, 512mb ram, etc), but I still favor a small/sleeker app than that bloated pig. When I'm running 5+ apps, I dont' want any slowdown due to my bloated virus scanner.

I use Norton System Works. Only keep the antivirus loaded to scan incoming emails and that's it. The other programs are there if I need them - no need to keep them loaded.

IMHO, NOD32. Not only is it light on the resources, updates are released every couple of days or so(therefore you know the guys back there are actually working ). Kapersky is also a good alternative though some people say it's somewhat resource hungry.

I use the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Client in Unattended mode; has a very small footprint, and works just as well as the commercial Norton AntiVirus - without the added bloatware.

Been a Norton fan for the past 6 years. With Norton 2003 last used. However, I decided to use Mcafee Enterprise Edition free from my university and it picked up several trojan viruses that Norton did not detect. I will no longer use Norton. I guess this is why Resnet pushes Mcafee at us students/faculty instead of any other scans.

I use AVG. I don't like virus scanners that clog up 30MB of ram (*cough* Norton and McAfee). I found that PCCillin uses about 15MB, but when it starts autoscanning (rather frequently at that), the system slows to a crawl.

NOD32 was really nice and resource light, but my trial ran out, so I settled with the almost-as-good yet still resource light AVG, which is using 1.7MB of ram right now (control panel and email scan disabled).
