I'm curious of people's opinion - despite the market saying players like 'free to play'.

I prefer the subscription model.

Mainly because I don't like developers incented to do anything but provide entertainment - not to create artificial limits in the game players will want to pay for getting rid of.

It's funny - despite preferring the subscription model as an opinion, I have spent a ton on World of Tank's 'free to play' model.

I understand there are gray areas - some F2P do it better than others, and some DLC starts to resemble micro-transactions, but there's still a difference.

Are you referring strictly for the MMO genre?

For MMOs, I prefer the subscription model, no cash shops or MTs at all. Lets the devs focus on creating content free from artificial barriers and grind. Seems like modern publishers have forgotten how to do it properly. ESO tried to do both, for example.

The only problem is most games now that have subscription base even have micro-transactions in them.

Hell even WoW did that a long time ago.

Either way the ones that run sub cost need to maintain a higher quality in gameplay and customer support and a lot of those die because they don't do that.

I like the idea of a sub providing the main or only revenue for a MMO and the devs giving us good content in return.

Unfortunately the market / users have decided that F2P is what they'll support with their wallets. "Free" sells games, just like most other content on the interwebs.

What's sad is that free usually is far from it - it's usually a lot more expensive somehow.

People giving free are getting it back somehow.

For example, 'free' periodicals are usually advertising machines, 'free' opinion sources are usually funded by agendas, etc.

HBO and BBC are good examples of getting more for payment.

Unfortunately, this is also what killed mobile gaming. Remember a few years back when people were claiming that smartphones and tablets would take over from set top consoles and PCs for gaming? Then all we got were ultra grindy, microtransaction laden junk.

I'd prefer micro-transactions. This way I don't need to pay unless I want to but I can still play the game.

I voted:

Subscription/one-time purchase: just give me an unlocked, full game

I think there are two kinds of gamers. One are the casual smartphone sit on toilet or in bed gamers who seem to be okay with pay to win, and more conventional "hard core" gamers who find the concept offensive. I'm pleased to say I'm in the latter camp.

Pay to win seems pretty much universally ridiculed on gaming message boards, but its popularity cannot be because we're all liars. It must be because we are not the people who are paying for it.

I personally hate the concept at its core. I have played some "free" games and not paid for them. Some of them are balanced such that it is possible to do so.

So far pay to win or microtransactions (hardly a difference) seem to be crap games anyway.

A game like GTA VI using the model of these mobile games would:

1) Be "free"
2) Have most of the city initially locked
3) You can steal only certain cars and need to expend gems to unlock the ability to steal faster ones or wait 4 hours between thefts
4) Have only two tracks on the radio; others are unlocked through gems also
5) All weapons beyond initial hand gun unlocked through gems
6) Spend gems to gain ability to steal police cars
7) etc.

And since they still ultimately are looking for $60/piece to fund the game, the result is that you will have a small subset of people who have no patience and so spend $200-300 on gems over the life of the game so that they can get what they want, and you'll end up with the bulk of people paying little to nothing, but spending hour upon hour upon hour unlocking gems for free by stealing crap cars and delivering to a chop shop over and over and over. They will think it clever because they are playing a game for free, but their time has lost value as they grind mercilessly.

It really depends on the game type. Cost/(Fun factor * hours spent playing) should be as low as possible.

Either Pay Once (preferred) or Subscription but not both together as I think that is a nasty cash grab.

In a way we all pay microtransactions anyway what with Season Passes, DLC etc.

I don't really care. I've done both and they're both fine within reason. I just prefer to not see gear/skills/etc available for cash that can't equally be obtained in game.

I prefer another model all together. Pay for the game and simply play. I don't mind the sub model as long as the game is worth a sub. I have experienced a very small amount of games over the last 5 years that were worthy of a sub for me.

Pay one-time or subscription (not together) if it's a online-only game like MMO's, will never pay a "season pass", "online pass" or whatever ripoff the publishers invent.

Also DLC should be free unless it's an whole expansion that adds substantial new features.

i dont have a preference, i'll buy a game based on other reasons. i'm an adult, a night of drugs n hookers costs more than a year in my fav game .. it depends whether i feel i get my money's worth or not.

generally, i *think* that small microtransactions work better because it keeps the devs working to bring new content, although this system too has resulted in horrible OP/P2W situations. i won't be voting.

and you should have put a "no option" option.

I completely disagree with gamers are not the ones feeding into the microtransaction thing. I think it's when threads like this come along, gamers who don't like microtransactions come in.

I've been lurking on neogaf lately and quite frankly, gamers REALLY do like microtransactions. Whether it's DLCs, Pay to Win, Skins, etc. gamers despite all that they say, want to get a game, then spend more money on that game to unlock/get more content.

They don't want to pay a 1 time fee and get everything, they like to pay as they go.

This is ESPECIALLY prevalent with DLCs though. Despite what "gamers" claim, they LOVE DLCs. Just love them. I've seen recent Nintendo games come under heavy criticism for not having DLCs, not having enough DLCs, or people wanting more DLCs.

Quite frankly, the "1 payment" model doesn't work. It won't work because there is a large base of gamers that is perfectly happy with continually paying into a game.

Being older and remembering Nintendo, SNES, etc. consoles I can't do the DLC/Microtransaction model at all. I won't pay for them. I realized purchasing BF4, COD, and Halo was pointless because I wouldn't get the DLCs for all of them and would end up paying none. I may get Halo fully unlocked now but that's it. It's growing tiresome to me to keep up with the latest DLC/microtransaction I need, I don't want to spend that time looking, I just want to get a game and play it.

The way I see it though, gaming for my type of gaming mentality has died. Games, hardcore as well as casual, are not developed for people like myself. I'll play a fun single player game now and then, or a JRPG, but for the most part, I'm probably done with the majority of games. I focus my time now not on new games, but on emulators/old games I never got around to playing/completing.

Prefer just to buy the game outright. I've never bought any DLC like guns/skins/maps and other worthless bs. I'll buy a Season Pass or DLC that adds actual decent game play, if I really enjoyed the main game. And only when it's like $2-3 on sale. Will never do microtransactions.

I can;t stand 99% of the mobile games out there because they are pure and blatant cash grabs.

want to play your game? pony up some money so you don't have to wait 3 days for that building to be built.
Want to be able to survive than the 1st few missions? pay us money so you can get the better weapons that actually allow you to have a chance.

As soon as I see that crap, I delete the game ( If I didn't already realize it was like that and then I wouldn't even bother downloading it).

I prefer pay for the client.
I have no problem with cash shops if they sell strictly convenience (extra storage/character slots) and/or looks (weapon/armor skins).

Depends on the game. I'm fine with how TF2 does it because you can play the entire game without purchasing anything and are not hampered by not purchasing things. Games like ponti mentioned, where you have to pay to move things along, or to unlock areas, well I have no interest in those types of games. I mean I don't even buy DLC because I hate that kind of stuff.

The poll is currently running 35/3/1 yet I find it ironic that we have a WOT thread in which numerous users have stated that they have spent hundreds of dollars on transactions over time to advance their tanks.

WOT is an excellent example of why I stay way from those games now, having spent over $200 on it.

I kind of noted that in my OP - while I have an opinion that that's the design I don't like, I've done just what you say on WoT (though I now spend little on it).
