Poll on religious tolerance

I'm curious about the status of how religion affects voting, the ability of people of various religions to get elected President.

For the poll, except in the answer "No, regardless of whether their religion affects their views", assume the perosn's views are consistent with the religion.

For example, if you elect a Muslim, they might refer to Allah in speeches and oppose gay marriage, but they're like mainstream American Muslims, not Taliban.

We have a black man for President, so I guess anything is possible.

Oh, I didn't vote because it is senseless.

Your saying the poll is senseless is senseless, IMO.

Everything I voted "Wouldn't have a negative effect on my vote" except the fundamentalist who believed the world was 6000 years old. There, I voted "would weigh against them."

Atheist here.

And before it became customary to not be a fucking racist, you'd say no ***** too.

You're exactly the opposite of anything that is right with the USA, the equal rights, the equal opportunity only extends to those you want to give it to, no muslims, no atheists and no gays are allowed.

You are utterly and completely pathetic and i do believe that if America stands for freedom and equality, you are also unamerican.

The funniest part of the poll is the suggestion that Christians are pro-war & pro-poverty. It's only but the "liberal" Christians who oppose such things. I would expect nothing less from he who created the poll

Gosh, maybe if evangelical Christians don't want to be associated with being 'pro-war' and 'pro-poverty', they should distance themselves from the GOP. They have only themselves to blame for having their religion politicized.

Only one I rejected in the poll was the 6k year old universe believer. I have no confidence whatsoever in such a person's ability to make rational decisions.

As for the other choices, why should I care. I always get stuck having to vote for a Christian, which would never be my first choice anyway.

To be honest, it would affect my views. As per my vote - I cannot be sure as it hasn't come to that yet. I've always been quite conflicted as those who claim to be Christian often don't share my views on Social Justice issues. I am inherently biased towards Christians despite my not wanting to be. Fundamentalist Christians I am overwhelmingly biased against, because lets face it, one's religious views (depending on what they are) can affect one's political positions to a great extent. I would probably vote for an agnostic over those of a capital "F" fundie, but would be a bit weary of an atheist running for office. I prefer a politician that shares my cultural sensibilities. I firmly believe that there should be no religious test for office, but upon examining my own opinions in the recent election, I find that my own words fall short of this goal. That may be the most waffle-y answer that one can give in this thread, but at least I admit to it. :/

The only thing I rejected in this poll was a fundamentalist Christian nutty enough to believe the earth was created 6000 years ago, but I would cheerfully make an exception for someone like Mike Huckabee who has a proven track record of still being pragmatic on public policy.

And perhaps the 2008 candidate I despised most was Mitt Romney, not because he was Morman, but because as the incredible plastic man, he tried and failed to reinvent himself, and there is just something in the phony of it all.

Give me a man who worships the God of Spinoza for a 1000 Alex, if its good enough for Einstien, its good enough for me.

I'd say the American people are pretty tolerant in terms of their President's religion. For example, in one of the more recent episodes the person was elected anyway (Obama). It's probably fair to say that some of Jeremiah Wright's black liberation theology beliefs are out of the mainstream of what most religious Americans believe, yet they listened to Obama's speech on the matter and gave him the benefit of the doubt with their votes.

I would never vote for a Muslim President. The specific reason being September 11th, 2001.

I voted based on the religions tolerance towards other religions.

Jews, Liberal Christians, Atheists, Buddhists, etc made the cut.

Muslims - if they had a liberal branch might get there.

Mormon , Evangelicals, Scientologists, Fundamentalists, etc - Nope get over your elitist ways.

So you won't vote for an individual because of a larger group of people who aren't necessarily consistent with what they identify with?
Riiiight...I would actually give an indivudal a chance. You are kidding me if you think there aren't elitist Jews, Liberal Christians, Atheists or Buddhists.

So I want to destroy my country? Come on Spidey...have some logic. You got it right with guns, but you are totally failboating in everything else.

==========

As for me, I would of course vote for any person irrespective of their religious views. If they think that they need special underwear to get to heaven, or they have to pray to God 5x a day I am fine with it because it has no bearing on the actions that follow through. I don't care if they believe in the rapture and think we are all doomed to hell because we don't acknowledge the divinity of Jesus. Hell we already have senators who espouse that view.

What I look is to see how that religion influences their actions on a practical level where real decisions need to be made. Are they always looking to be just in their actions? Do they believe in helping the poor - regardless of whether help is 'self help' or through actual assistance to the poor? Do they want to bring honest and peaceful resolutions to any problem that exists be it domestic or not? Do they present themselves in a humble fashion and are willing to listen to others that they may disagree with? Are they willing to compromise with others to get things done?

I would much rather have a president with a character strongly defined through religion than a president who acts like a typical sleezebag but talks about being nominally religious. But I will support the former because of his character, not because it derives from religion. I will not support the latter for the same reasons.

The problem with the religious right is that in the political arena they seem to lose a lot of that. Some of the most religious Christians I know are incredibly nice and honest and people I'd want to be around, but when it comes to politics it is as if some people have completely forgotten what the Bible actually writes about.
