I believe Judge Kavanaugh is telling the truth, i'll give Dr. Ford enough credit that she thinks she is telling the truth, but memory can be a tricky thing, especially memories developed during therapy.
I think you're confusing what happened here with something like "recovered memories" which happens during hypnosis. That IMO is extremely suspect. It did not happen here. What happened here is she told a marital counselor about this event because she had to explain why she and her husband were arguing over her odd request to install a second front door in their house.
Since it's unlikely we have a case of mistaken identity here, given that she identified both Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge being in the same room with her, this is pretty clearly a situation where one is lying and the other is telling the truth.
