As the Shinano Mainichi (Japanese newspaper) posted yesterday

"...Plextor (Shinano-Kenshi) sold over 1.500.000 units in the past year.

- In Japan around 288.000 units.
- In U.S.A around 658.000 units.
- In Europe around 577.000 units.

The world market share until September from January (of 2000) was 3.4% and the Plextor rank was 10th. The Plextor drives seems to be very popular in Europe and USA but not in Japan..."

i'm no hardware pro here, and i don't have the $$$ to be buying multiple units to test and such, but i've had a memorex 2/2/6 CDRW, an iomega 4/4/24 CDRW, and currently an iomega/plextor 12/10/32a CDRW... IMO the plextor is the best of the ones i've used as it burns very quickly, obviously, but the main thing is that it hasn't even gotten close to giving my a coaster... the memorex was horrid, and the 4/4/24 occasionally couldn't handle cd copying... also, the 12/10/32 is my first burner to read cd's very wel with not much lag in data reading...

In general, Plextor IMO does make a dang good product, is it the best, i don't know but it is worth a pretty penny... maybe not as much as it is retail though ... = P (slightly overpriced)

Think Twice!! Penetration of Home PC in japan is not as high as U.S.A. Also population of U.S.A and Europe are larger than japanese population so that it is reasonable that the number of units sold in japan is much lower than U.S.A or Europe.

They rock, but hyped up, too many zealots, not a good thing.

The population of Japan is around 125 million, US around 275 million and Europe around 575 million (not counting Russia). If you take those figures into consideration, Japan and US are pretty much tied with Europe falling behind in number of Plextor units sold per capita.

I am with LXi. Good stuff but people can exaggerate it beyond what it really is.

the Ricoh 12x/10x/32x is better in my opinion, and costs nearly 50% less...

it has Just Link - a form of "burn-proof", a larger 4MB buffer, and the fastest CD-RW speeds available (yes, faster than plextor's)...and faster access time as well...

$199 CDN....the plextor is approx. $370...definitely not worth the extra money....oh, forgot, the Ricoh has faster DAE as well...which drive is better now?

plextor's still good, but compared to this ricoh drive, it's a piece of sh1te for the money

"The world market share until September from January (of 2000) was 3.4% and the Plextor rank was 10th."
Well Plextor only released their first ATAPI/IDE drive last year, before that it was all scsi. The total will probably be higher after this year as more ppl buy lower costing ide version.

"the fastest CD-RW speeds available (yes, faster than plextor's)..."
They both can use CDRW speeds up to 10x. How is the Ricoh faster?
"oh, forgot, the Ricoh has faster DAE as well"
My Plextor 12/10/32S drive can do DAE on 74min cd's at up to 32x speeds, a little faster on cd's over 74min. Is the Ricoh drive faster than that?
"a larger 4MB buffer"
The scsi version of the drive that I have also has a 4mb buffer.

its all in the cool name - I had never heard of em before I visited these boards, but the name makes you think Plexiglass - the most resilient glass ever made..so why wouldn't a Plextor burner be awesome?

On a more serious note, my TDK burner (plextor rebadgered clone) does indeed rock - espically the blue tray...blue is cool!
