For those of you who don't know, this guy is trying to be the first tourist in space. The U.S. said no, so he pays Russia $20 million for a spot aboard on of thier rockets that is going to the international space station. Nasa keeps saying no, but the Russians have threatened to delay one of their trips to the ISS. This owuld leave the astronauts up there without an escape system should there be an emergency.

I say if he goes, the russians better give some of that $$$ to NASA!

Well somebody needs to be the first. This space thing will never really kick off until you get the tourist bucks in there. If tourist were allowed everyday there would be a hotel on the moon in ten years..

Why? NASA was too dumb to take the 20 million. If the guy has the money and is willing to pay I see no problem with it.

I agree with Linflas. Why should the US prevent a tourist from going up into space? It's not like he's going to Cuba or some nation like that. He's going into open territory.

if they got enough of these crazy rich folks, it would be tax relief for the rest of us.

Space tourism is actually a class at my school. I think they're jumping the gun personally. That is till I heard about this...who knows.

I agree with the others, if he has the money, and is properly trained so that he doesn't present a hazard, there is no reason he shouldn't be allowed to go. I would love to do it myself, but the price tag is too high . Lol, its also funny, because NASA always throws up the figure of it costing $10k/kg to launch something into space. By their own figures, they would be getting a lot more than their standard amount . Since this guy probably weighs somewhere between 70-90kg, they would be making more than 2000% profit. And having people paying $10-20m for a trip to the space station would help alleviate some of the financial burden of each launch (I believe it costs something like $300m to launch the shuttle). Speaking of the cost of launching the shuttle, does NASA plan on using capsule type launch vehicles for delivering people to the space station once it becomes fully operational? Launching a capsule would be much less expensive per launch than using one of the shuttles...

I have to go with NASA. If they say his training is okay then I say ok. If they have reservations about his holding up then I say no. We have lost enough lives in the space program: don't take unecessary risks.
