Okay, the two most popular DVD player battles against each other in this one fall match. Vote in the poll and comment on the features, pros and cons of the two softwares. Thank you for voting.

UPDATE: Assume that the latest versions are used for reference.

depends, I just use the one that work each time, sometimes when I reinstall windows windvd doesnt work so I use powerdvd and the other way around.

All in all I like windvd more, I just hate the control panel in powerdvd.

When two apps are as close to each other performance and quality wise its all a matter of interface.

WinDVD all the way.

WinDVD 2000 has a superior picture.

PowerDVD has more features/option such as screen capture. Very handy if you're watching the "Road Trip: Unrated" DVD. Anyone know which scene I am referring to?

WinDVD has an undocumented screen capture function also. I believe it is the "P" key. As far as which one I use, I use both also. I now use PowerDVD more often for the easier useage of zoom feature.

WinDVD:

[*]Support for a Radeon's hardware iDCT function
[*]Downmixes the LFE channel in 4 speaker mode, power DVD doesn't. Granted most bass does come from the 5 main channels, but when the LFE channel is used it's usually pretty heavy impact..(ie the tanks in saving private ryan).
[*]Finally I like the WinDVD right click menu a lot better than power DVD's...and since I watch full screen the right click interface is important to me.

Win DVD 2000 2.3M (make sure you get the M or you lose 4 and 6 channel speaker modes, only 2 or AC-3 passthrough in non-M) is the best software DVD player

I must admit, PowerDVD has some useful features (like screen cap, and zoom) but for just regular watching it's WinDVD all the way.

Edit: I too would like a sample of PowerDVD's screen cap...I've never seen the unrated version of road trip, but I can easily guess which scene you are referring to

well i am building a computer for my rents...and i got them an asus v7700 32meg card....and also a pioneer 16x dvd...well the pioneer came with powerDVD....and i loaded that first... it was terrible...so i switched to the asus 2000 dvd software that came with the video card...and daaaaaaamn it looks really good....has the scene capture and easy menu to load full screen...i just hope the new herc ultra card i ordered for me has something as nice....i am not sure who actually writes the software but its great.

I use both app' because powerdvd is more of a geek ware, and the still-screen capture ability is great (road trip is okay, but imagine the Dahm triplets playboy movie, woooooooh, ) windvd is just superior overall.

Do you use a 2 or 4 speaker set? If you do you'll be missing the really heavy bass if you get PowerDVD.

Get WinDVD.

Look here, digital-digest and read some of the reviews. These guys know what they are talking about.

Oh and the new Cyberlink PowerDVD 3.0 has a bunch of new features.

everyone jocks WinDVD's quality over powerDVD, but i seriously can't notice the difference...i downloaded the latest winDVD beta to see just how much better it was (and if it truly was i'd buy it, or find a crack for the demo, or etc.) but i just couldn't notice any difference...

nd since i already have the full versino of poerdvd, i just use it...quality is NTO a concern, unless u watch DVDs on your monitor while u sit right infront of it, which i imagine some people do...though not myself.

anyone know if you can get a remote software supported for a computer (for controlling dvd-rom/cd-rom, etc.)?...ithought i saw one somewhere but can't recall what the functions on it were for.

I voted for PowerDVD, because I've been using it for about 2 years and it's a really feature filled program.

PowerDVD, because its the only dvd player that doesn't crash on my machine while getting AC-3 out of my SB live in Win2k. That was a pain in the butt to get working by itself.

I own the Road Trip Unrated DVD and would be more than willing to take a few captures but need some help on how to do that.

First of all if you're curious about what scenes read this review and look for all occurences of shower

1) I have PowerDVD version 2.5.0.0 While the movie is playing if I click the capture button nothing happens. How exactly do I take screen captures of certain scenes? After hitting the capture button where are these files stored, in which directory? Clipboard?

2) You would LOVE "the scene" even more if I could turn it into a video or quicktime file from my DVD. How do you do that?

PM or e-mail me if necessary with instructions, thanks.
