None of the above. The word Qatar in Arabic includes a letter which does not exist in English, ghayn. To make the ghayn sound, forcefully expel air (similar to the sound of the h in the word "heat") while prounouncing a character like the letters "gh" at the end of the word "enough." An English transliteration of the word simply renders it as Qatar which is the closest we can reasonably come to pronouncing it in a way that would be understood by an Arabic speaker. The name of the dictator of Libya begins with the same character, which is why his name (Moamar Qaddafi) gets spelled and pronounced so many different ways in English, none of which are completely correct.

well, that is not really sensible for a poll. I mean, the way I pronounced khadaffi sounds rancid

That's why English speakers generally just say "Caw-Ter" instead. A properly pronounced ghayn is extremely uncomfortable for an English speaker to pronounce, and to our ears sounds like someone trying to pronounce the letter G while hocking up a loogie at the same time. Our pronunciation isn't correct, but it doesn't sound grating to our ears either, whereas if it were pronounced correctly it would.

It is very strange to have the "Q" with out the "u" following right behind. It must be some drunk that translate the sounding word from another language to the alphabet.

Its like that other guy says...none of them.

If you know the proper enunciation of Al- Qaeda then take the beginning part and just apply it to Qatar.

As for Q being nex to an A odd I think its odd how Beowulf has characters named Hrothgar
