Poll: Quake 3 and other games w/ 3D acceleration

When I play Quake 3 or any other games with 3D acceleration on my K6-3+ Rig(see my rigs) the computer freezes a couple of seconds after it starts. Sometimes the computer freezes completly and other times just the picture freezes(but I can still here the sound). And usually I can exit out of the game blind and it goes back to my desktop and I can see the picture again. What the hell is causing this? I have had Win98 and Win2k installed and it still does the same thing. I just got a new hard drive for it so I reinstalled Win98 and it still does this. I ran DXDIAG and when it tested DirectDraw acceleration the part w/ the black and white rectangles don't move but the little box thing moves though. When I clicked troubleshoot it had me disable hardware acceleration from system under the control panel. The test worked after that but now 3D acceleration is unavailable. This is just BS. I paied all this money to upgrade that piece of crap and now it isn't working! WTF? Please help! Thanks!!

what drivers are you running? tried re-installing them?

can you try another video card?

I don't think it's the drivers because the drivers for Win9x and Win2K are different but the same thing happens. This is the only PCI card I have that supports 3D acceleration. So I can't.

I seem to recall that there is a piece of software that came with QuakeIII that will check your display drivers and provide upgrades for them. The issue is definetly with the video card drivers. I had the same problem with a Banshee, I got new drivers and everything was fine. The OS drivers that Windows provide are almost always out of date. D/L the newest drivers from the web and try that. It'll likely do the trick.

My friend had similar problems. In his case, his 3D card was overheating. The only way he could play was to take the case off, then put a large fan right next to his case that blew air into it. Try that once, and see what happens. He had a Diamond Stealth II S450 or something like that. Now he has a Voodoo3 3000 PCI. Everything works like a charm and no more overheating. Good luck.
