poll: rar or zip?

rar has best combination of compression ratio/speed/convenience/features.

7z gets better compression ratios.

BTW, zip has NO ADVANTAGES WHATSOEVER. WinRAR actually works with .zip files faster than WinZIP does.

And if you are going to create crappy .zip files, at least use 7-zip to do so..... Even with zip archives 7zip has about 10% better compression ratio than zip. If you use its own format it is more like half the size of a .zip, but much slower.

Winzip has always worked fine for me. I've not seen any reason to buy a new zip-type program yet.

zip is more popular, but that doesn't make it better technically.

Rar usually compresses more, but zip is faster for me and more convenient.

definetly rar imho, and winrar is one of the best proggies I have since it handles about any compression format (decompression at least) as well as installers etc. is quite handy.

Depends on the use. I'f I'm sending something to a clueless family member or co-worker then it's Winzip.

If I'm using it for my own purposes, then Winrar.

UHArc is free.
bz2 is free.

All are better than zip.

BTW WinZIP is shareware, just like WinRAR.

WinRAR. Zip is outdated both in compression technology and features. ACE is technically better yet but not enough to outweigh the older and more common RAR, plus I just prefer WinRAR to WinACE.
