What time was your buddy using the snow blower?

Also, as the others have stated, check with your local laws/ordinaces on what times are OK for LOUD NOISES!

Around 4 AM too. He also works early. He simply apologized to the guy and the said "nothign I can do, gotta get out of the house" The angry neighbor tried to argue further so my buddy just cut him off by starting the machine again turning around and continued with the driveway.

And what if your job requires you to be in work at 4am on a weekend? Then you yourself would be allowed to do it at 3am because it's a work day. If it's okay to do it at 6am on the theory that the idiot in question needs to get to work then it's okay to do it 24 hours a day 7 days of the week as long as you have the justification that it's to get to work.

That's pure idiocy. If the snow is so bad that you need a snowblower at 6am then stay the fuck home. And if it's not that bad, use a shovel.

And if someone, including my neighbors, work on a Saturday or Sunday and have to use a snow blower to get there, I am okay with that. I would ask them politely if that was the case and then grow the fuck up and go back to sleep after they are done, because I'm not some silly twat. If it isn't in the morning, who gives a fuck? "Damn those neighbors making noise a 2PM when I'm at work!!"

And you must not be from the north. Yeah, let me stay home from work 3 months out of the year because I don't want to annoy my neighbors.

I revise my initial assessment. If it is required to get to work, the neighbor can shove off. I'd tell him if he doesn't like it, he is welcome to come shovel the driveway quietly or pay me to stay home.

Every now and then clear his driveway for him. That should shut him up.

I do all of my neighbors now. when we've got deep snow, its faster for me to snowblow four driveways than it is to shovel one.

And for all you guys that aren't getting up for work by 6am - you've got no reason to complain unless you're working night shift.

Get yo' ass out of bed!

This is seriously foreign to me. How could you complain about snowblowing? How?

I have seen people snowblow for their neighbors. I have seen people snowblow the street when the plow doesn't come fast enough. I have never saw someone complain about snowblowing.

idk, I really want to sabotage my neighbor's snowblower, or drag it into the river.

rather than creating a snowbank alongside their house or in their alleyway or something, they dump all the snow from their sidewalk to create an extra few feet of snow on top of whatever cars had the misfortune of parking in front of their house. (and around here, 99% of people park in the street; there are only three driveways on my entire block)

Exactly. It's an exceptional situation. Get the hell over it.

Your suggestion makes no sense. Unless it is an ongoing storm, there is no need to stay home. The roads are plowed and people can drive to work. Its that last mile of your driveway which also needs to be cleaned so you can get out to the roads.

Calling the cops is a superior option. If they aren't doing anything wrong then so be it. But there always the chance that one thing could lead to another and someone ends up shot for waking me up at 4am.

call the cops on them, illegal to dump snow from your driveway onto the road.

I don't get out of bed until like 8AM or so. But, my commute is around 5 minutes (8 if I catch the train). Easy to do a quick shower, grab a piece of fruit and get dressed. I still don't complain about any noise. I simply go back to sleep.

Last week the mall behind by house decided load their snow banks into a dump truck. They were out doing it for two nights, one from 4am to 7am and another from midnight to 4am. Naturally I didn't get any sleep. All you could hear was them revving the Diesel engine of this front end loader, then the beeping of the backup alarm. This is like right outside my bedroom window. This is during the week when I have to go to work the next day.

Apparently the town constitutes it as ploughing so they basically told me to fuck off when I complained. It's been an ongoing issue with this plaza though. They do all their maintenance in the wee hours of the morning. They're also the only plaza in the area that does that. Town doesn't care, even when they are clearly violating the bylaw. Cops just say phone the bylaw. So what do you do in this situation? That's not a rhetorical question.

In the US I would file a complaint that the Police/City is not enforcing, or selectively, the rules.
After that sue the city/police to get a court order.

I am from the north and deal with snow regularly. Like a major storm yesterday and another coming tomorrow. And rather than needing to grow up, people in my neighborhood grow brains and use a little bit of consideration and common sense. We don't run snowblowers at 5 or 6 am. I'll repeat, if the snow is so bad that you can't get out of your driveway without a snowblower call in sick. And if you can get out of your driveway without a snowblower, then do so. It's not rocket science.

just curious, but if you know ahead of time that snow will be coming, why wouldn't you park your car in such a spot that you've got the littlest amount of snow to remove as possible?

back when I actually had a driveway and I knew snow was coming, I'd street park overnight (or park on the edge of the driveway) so that I only had to worry about digging out my own spot.

That works as long as the plow isn't coming through before you leave.

The thing is... any human with an ounce of empathy should never even experience the impulse to complain about this. Nobody wants to be out in the driveway at 4 AM running a snowblower, anymore than anybody wants to be listening to one. It should be an instinctive conclusion that the guy running the snowblower is doing so because he has to, not because that's his favorite goddamn time to move snow.

In other words, people are selfish assholes a lot of the time, but the selfish asshole in this case was the complaining neighbor. If he'd given me shit I would have blown my entire front yard on top of his car. Fu*k him.

Where the hell do you live that having to use a snowblower is grounds for not going into work?

We're getting a foot of snow tonight and I have to be at work by 6:30am - AND it will be a 45 minute drive because of the road conditions.

Guess what? The snowblower starts up at 4:30am tomorrow! And my neighbor a few doors down will be out with his about 30 minutes later.

If my snowblower wakes you up, instead of coming out to bitch, how 'bought stopping and thanking your fortune.

"Geez, I'm glad I'm not the poor bastard that has to be outside in a snowstorm at 4:30am."

There's "always a chance" someone could get shot for waking you up at 4 AM? What extremely dangerous part of the world do you live in? Glad my neighbors are more or less sane.

bravo... my thought exactly. if it is that much of a pain the snowblow at 4 AM, I'm not going to grab the shovel either at 4 AM

I wish MY landlord would snow blow at 4 AM.

Last storm we had, the condo maintenance guys plowed the road, but didn't snow blow. I went outside at 5 to shovel around and clean our 2 cars. Had to walk through knee deep snow to get to the plowed road. Of course, I'm thankful they plowed. But then again, they also have a pretty quiet 2-stage tractor attachment snow blower. By the time my wife got up for work, it was plowed.

I was implying they would get shot by the cop... because on ATOT everyone gets shot by cops.

Anyhoo I live in an area with a noise ordinance. All my neighbors shovel out in the morning and snow blow at night and we all get along great.

Yay generalizations!

I've got a 3500 sq/ft driveway in a cul de sac. My wife works in a critical care setting in a major hospital and has to be in between 6:00AM-7:00AM depending on the day. If it's been snowing all night and the plows have been through I've got a 4' deep drift at the end of the drive and another huge pile to move to get out. I'm running a snowblower or my tractor at 5:00AM or 6:00AM to make sure she can get out. Once she's out of the drive it's usually decent to get in since it's a high traveled highway and interstate to get to work. Between traffic, plows, and copious amounts of salt the roads are good enough. It's just getting out of the drive/cul de sac that's the worst.

I must have misunderstood you. You said something about calling the cops being the superior solution, and all I could think about was what I would like to do to anyone who would call the cops out in a storm because a neighbor was running a snowblower.
