How far away is the closest house?
Like I said, it's no different than most others in the sorts of communities where snowblowing at 4am could be problematic. If I had a huge driveway, chances are my neighbors are much further from me, in which case it's likely a moot point.
This really is a key question here, as we're all arguing from different perspectives. Mine, which I've qualified, is that of a suburban tract-housing homeowner. Let's face it, when you move into house in one of these communities (where you're practically breathing in your neighbors' exhales), you lose a lot of that "I'll do whatever I want." It's one of the reasons I'll never move into another suburb. I'd love to build a dirt track in my backyard, and while there's no ordinance or HOA article stating I can't, it would still be a pretty dick move.
If the OP's buddy lives on an acre of land and his neighbor freaks out about every little bird chirp he hears, well, that's a totally different story.
I'm not sure why you're still arguing. You've already said that you would use a snow blower if you had a huge driveway. (I would imagine OP's 10 car driveway counts as huge)
Just point the chute at their car and bury it.
That's like a room mate complaining about flushing the toilet in the middle of the night. :|
Better yet in the middle of the night let all the air out of their rear tires, put a chuck on your garden hose and add water until it stops. Top them off (to sidewall of course, don't want winter fleas!) and watch hilarity ensue. Don't do the fronts because it could cause a wreck.
Imagine the look on their face and the tire guy when the reason for all the ass shaking was due to water and ice - inside the tire! :awe:

he's a troll
What is it with you people and reading comprehension?
1. I wasn't arguing; just saying that we needed clarification.
2. As I told RudeGuy, this topic isn't about the OP's driveway, it's about his friend's driveway, which as of yet, we know nothing about (RudeGuy's horrible assumptions notwithstanding).
3. I never said I would use a snowblower.
Seriously guys, READING what you're replying to goes a very, very long way.
YOU are the one with bad reading comprehension.
You've already said that you would use a snow blower if you had a huge driveway.
OP told an anecdote about his friend, then discussed his internal conflict with his 10 car driveway.
Had a convo with a buddy who said he got into a heated argument early in the morning in his driveway with a neighbor. My buddy was snowblowing early in the morning so he could leave for work. Obviously running a machine like that is going to be audible to everybody. His neighbor came out in his pajamas and yelled at my friend for making noise.
Which now has me thinking. We are due for about a foot of snow tomorrow morning. I have a driveway that can fit 10 cars in it. I have a tenant upstairs so I have to clear the driveway for him. I'm not going to shovel the driveway by hand when a perfectly working snowblower is parked behind the house. I'm going on a ski trip tomorrrow morning and before I leave for the mountain, I need to clean off the driveway. I'll probably be up and snowblowing at 4 AM which is the only time I'll be able to do it.
I don't really want to make enemies where I live but I'm not going to bust my ass either shoveling by hand!
<--snip-->
and my bad, you implied you wouldn't have a problem with using a snowblower when you said it was a moot point because no neighbors were close enough to hear.
So I'm the one with poor reading comprehension because I was discussing the ACTUAL TOPIC - whether his friend's neighbor had a right to complain - rather than one of 10 tangential conversations that you latched onto without telling anyone? I mentioned said neighbor several times throughout my posts. Any reasonable person who bothered to READ would have easily concluded who and what I was referring to.
I just read yesterday my city ordinance it to clear driveways and adjacent sidwalks so their could be legal justification to snowblowing at odd hours.
Up here noise laws do not apply within 48 hr after snow fall when it comes to snow removing equipment.
No person shall create any loud noise in such a manner as to unnecessarily disturb, without reasonable cause, the quiet, comfort or repose of any person between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., except as allowed by permit issued by the City.
Yes it has a muffler, but regardless it is still loud.
I guess my question really is, regardless of the law, would something like this bother you? I live in NH and snow is a reality here. Its not like mowing your lawn. You dont need to mow your lawn at 3 AM but if you can't get out of your house, well you need to snowblow whatever time that is. Plus with all of the snowplows and salt/sand spreaders going up and down the streets, there is alot of noise anyway.
LMAO! That's a dusting. That's not snow.
Isn't much of a driveway either. Love to see him shoveling my 120 ft drive, and hoisting the snow over the 6 ft snowbanks.
With pins in his spine better yet. Not everyone can shovel snow for 3 or 4 hours straight. And why would I? Snow blower gets it done in 30 minutes.
my plow guy gets mine done in like 5
He comes before 6am is all I know. I have never actually heard him.
Wish my snow blower got it done in 30 min. With a snow blower, it still took 2½ hours today. Nothing like having a deep, heavy snowfall and a insanely long, wide, circular unpaved driveway [can hold 12+ cars].
Most plow drivers shy away from my long dirt driveway or else want more than $150 per plow.
natural gas line + asphalt torch ftw!
Heated driveway even more FTW.
