Which one do you think is better?

I get paid hourly and have to punch in and out; including lunch time. I see the guys at work higher than me just walk in and out so they must be salary based. They also get the hour lunches, while I have to make sure I punch in and out on time during my half hour of lunch time.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Hourly has always benefited those who work overtime. I've been salary now for over a year and I prefer it to hourly. Even though I don't get overtime pay, I do get comp time which works out nicely. Plus I take longer lunches and don't rush to get back... no more clocking in is nice! Oh and the yearly $1500+ Christmas bonus is cool too.

OT is non-existant with salary. u could work 50 hours one week, and only get paid 40.

i'd love to be hourly again.

Not true. There are jobs that are salary plus overtime.

I'm salaried.

The upside: I manage my time. If I work 60 hours or 35 hours, it's up to me and the workload. I can take executive lunches if I wish and basically come into work between 7:30-9:30am... I have a feeling of flexibility and get greater benefits from the organization. (increased vacation and a pension)

The downside: I get paid monthly rather than biweekly, work overtime with no extra pay, sometimes come into work after hours to fix stuff, etc...

Overall, it's not bad....just something to get used to. I like the fact that I'm not pressured to record every minute I work and it takes some pressure off since a lot of hourly operations seem to be extremely clock-oriented. If I work my hours after 5 or 6pm.....whatever.

I am salaried and can get up to 5 hrs overtime per week. Hours 41-45 are unpaid, but I can get paid 46-50. 50+ is unpaid. It's called exempt-overtime with a five hour gate.

I'm salary and I never understood why we have vacation days or sick days. I can understand keeping a tally, but they say you can't take a vacation day until you accrue enough hours. Huh? What does it matter? I'll make the same amount either way. Am I missing something?

I think it all depends on your work situation. I've seen salary people working 80 hours per week, which means they aren't making very much $$$ per hour.

Hourly, and I love it. I get 15 days a year for vacation plus the standard holidays. I don't clock in and out, I just enter eight hours on my online timesheet and then submit the hours at the end of the week. It's not really all the complicated. If I want to take an hour lunch or come in late I can, so long as I make 80 hours for the pay period. YMMV, but being paid by the hour isn't as bad as some of you are making it sound.

Most Salary people get ripped off cause they have to work longer hours and dont get paid (what a scam). I am hourly right now, till I get promoted early next year to salary + bonus.

It really depends on the job and work environment.

but at the same time, you could work 30 hours another week and get paid for 40

I'm salaried and enjoying it... I do occasionally work more than 40 hours/week, but not often. in the meantime, it's nice to not be constantly watching the clock. I can come late, leave early, and don't need to worry about having an unpaid lunch hour.

Hourly... but our system is best of both worlds..

I get paid hourly but do not have to clock in - instead, I fill out a time sheet at the end of the week that indicates what 'jobs' I've been working on during the week. As long as the jobs have plenty of time left on them, our company is making good money.

We can work as much overtime as we want. Some people will put in a 100-hour week every now and then (industrial programming during startup/troubleshooting period).

We also have a 'profit-sharing' bonus.. and the company contributes to some kind of retirement plan (that I haven't really researched yet).

I'm salaried with overtime. Every hour I work past 40 is my equivalent hourly wage plus $6.50. It may not sound like much, but I have not heard of any other engineering jobs that do this. If they do, it's extremely rare. That adds up to be a lot of money for weeks like this one - where I'll be working 50+ hours. Plus, overtime is approved by default on any project. We're not encouraged to work more than we need to, but we are encouraged to input how much time we actually worked. We have to write down how long we worked on what projects at the end of the day, but this is so they charge the projects the right amount of "money."

On top of that, I get 1.5 weeks off for Christmas and could start taking vacations whenever I want. It's nice coming in whenever you want, too.
