<< Heh, very uneducated people in this thread. I work at an ASO (authorized shipping outlet) for both Fedex and UPS, along with the USPS, Airborne Express, and LTL companies for the packages which can't be shipped by our normal carriers. The UPS driver in this area is my father.. I can assure you that UPS is NOT underpaid. Fedex also just got a raise, and are making nearly the same cash as UPS. However, Fedex Ground workers make a crappy wage, and are actually paid per package (ala RPS). Fedex Ground charges us $12 to take ONE package, just because we have set up an account with them. Also, we've had numerous packages lost through Fedex Ground over the years, but UPS has never lost a single item. Whenever a damage claim is issued to UPS, it is paid back to us within 5 days, and we reimburse the actual person who shipped it the following day. I would definitely recommend UPS over Fedex, when shipping by ground service. UPS ground is also guaranteed within 5 days to any point inside the continental US. However, if you're shipping to Canada, DO NOT declare the package's value over $30, unless you want the receiver to pay out the ass to get his package.
As for air services, UPS has also proved much more flexible. They are willing to come out late at night to pick up an air package/letter, anywhere until 8 pm. Fedex refuses to even call us back on anything. The driver is nice enough, but he really does nothing... even makes me load all of the packages into his truck. UPS refunds your $ within 2 days, if an air package arrives late, whereas Fedex can take up to 2 or 3 weeks.
For overall customer satisfaction, we typically suggest UPS Ground to our customers for all packages that aren't enormous.

Having worked for the UPS main hub in Dallas (loading packages into trucks) and having visited the main Fed-Ex hub in Memphis and the hq in Germantown and having had to fvck with numerous damaged/lost package claims at the shipping center at Staples, I will give FedEx the nod any day of the week over UPS.
Regarding your package - that sucks but if there's no physical damage to the outside of the box, more than likely it would have gotten just as messed up with UPS as FedEx.
