Selling is legal, boinking is legal, so why is selling boinking illegal?

One of the things I could see arising from the legalization of prostitution is that women who are on the edge financially who may NOT want to sell their bodies feel that it's a last resort and do so anyway. There's a big different between making that step when it's legal and making it when it's illegal. No matter what you say, I believe the profession inherently possesses the ability to victimize women - not that all women in the profession are victims, but that many women in that line of work are there because they see nothing else for themselves. If you say that the women are there by *their* choice and that they should be able to make that choice, I think that you're really stretching to rationalize something that allows women to be objectified. So no.

Anyway, I certainly think it should be legalized and regulated properly. It may not be the most "honorable" profession, but why not make it legitimate? If you choose to be a prostitute of your own free will, then I think you should have the right to make that choice.

If it were legalized, I would require that they be checked regularly for STDS, must be affiliated with a licensed brothel, etc. Just treat it like any other business, essentially. Taxes, licenses, inspections, the works. It would certainly help to eliminate some crime related to prostitution and the revenue earned from taxing brothels could be applied to cleaning up red-light districts or other public works projects, as someone else said before.

Yeah, but prostitution is going to happen anyway no matter what you do. People will always want sex and other people will always need money and be willing to do almost anything about it. If it were legal and regulated, you'd be able to keep the spread of STDs in check to an extent and you'd also take away the pimp's power to abuse the women who work for him or his ability to keep them on a "leash" via drug addiction. Everyone wins.

I don't think so... The reason it does currently is because it's illegal, and only scumbags are in a hurry to break the law. During prohibition, there were plenty of skank speakeasies, with undesirables hanging about. There were nice ones too (from what my great grandfather used to tell me), but they were in the minority. Now, nicer bars/clubs/restaurants with strict licensing laws are the norm, and skank bars are only in already skanky areas.

Legalized, regulated, scheduled STD testing, and TAXED, prostitution would in effect clean things up quite a bit. Same location laws as apply to strip clubs, of course, with no alcohol served, would be ideal.
