it probably makes it a little easier to breathe, since the moving air has lower pressure and would take less effort to get sucked into your lungs.

I have never seen a fan with a timer here in SC

It's apparently a japanese paranoia too. My mom used to freak out if I left a fan blowing in my direction while I slept.

Cripes, I've slept in a snow tunnel I built on a camping trip, through a blizzard, through a small desert sandstorm, and one time I slept through a 4 hour downpour in the mountains. I think I can handle a fan blowing some cool air in my face.

Debunking time:

1. Catch a cold?? HOW? Does the fan attract or reproduce virii of the common cold and blow them in your face? Er, ok.

2. Chapped lips. Possible, but not really likely. Chapped lips are usually from elements (cold, heat) or dehydration.

3. Suffocate. Oh please. In what backwards-ass timewarp alternate dimension does INCREASED AIRFLOW cause you to suffocate? Ever seen a sleep apnea mask? It's basically an air pump that force feeds air through your nose.

That way the mosquito won't be able to follow her breath back to her. Then her roommate told me that yeah, it's DANGEROUS to have the fan blow over you when you sleep. Her reasoning was that "The wind would blow too hard over your mouth that you won't be able to breathe and you might DIE". I always thought it was just cuz you might catch a cold..... what do you all think?

i have had one blowing on me for the last 8 years, you wont die.

I ALWAYS have a ceiling fan going when I sleep.......I get hot too easy without it and the background noise masks other noises so I sleep better.

Won't be able to breathe.......HAHAHAHA...too stupid......LOL! That's a good one.....

I have the ceiling fan going most of the time during the summer, but that's because it's practically quiet. I can't stand noise when I'm sleeping.

Not only that, but she has NO reason to continue to live on this earth. Not only is she taking up space, but she is by FAR the stupidest and most worthless person I have ever seen. Not only would I murder her if you gave me her address, but I would be willing to take the chair to make sure she never takes another breath. You can do us all a favor by blasting her in the back of the fvcking skull with a shotgun.

:Q Somebody's had a bad day...

:Q I thought she was a little strange in the head... but I didn't think of going THAT far.

Well.. this was my only idea for catching a cold. I thought with the fan going, you're gonna definitely get colder. And I heard that if you get cold, your immune system weakens and thus the probability of catching a cold increases.

Well, then wouldn't air conditioning increase the chances of catching a cold?

I always have a fan blowing over me when I sleep - summer or winter - because it keeps the air fresh and cool, well, at least cooler than it would be without the fan at least.

I'm weird though, I have the AC on in my car 365 days a year

Seriously. What kind of pea brain do you have to think, let alone say.. something like that?

For the record, I've had a fan blowing over me while sleeping every summer for the last.. 15 years? and I'm still alive.

If it's warm and summer time, you aren't going to catch a cold.. lol

I guess I would have to agree to that. But perhaps air conditioning lowers the temp of the entire room so germs are not as active? While a fan would cool you down but the area would still be warm? Ok, I think I'm beginning to sound like an idiot.

you might catch a cold. at night the temp is lower and when you are sleeping your temp is also lower. with a fan blowing it might be a bit too low...

but that crap about not being able to breath and die deserves a big

Yes, yes you are.
The vast majority of viruses won't be affected by a small variation in temperature.

It seems to be an Asian old wives' tale. My Chinese parents tell me the same thing.

I sleep with a fan on but point it at my feet because I do get chapped lips if I point it at my face.

OH yeah, That's sound medical science at work.

Your body temperature drops anyway as you sleep.

it's a rumor among koreans...her roommate's probably korean...

i'm korean and i've been told this many times, and my parents say it's true, grandparents says it's true..BUT..

as long as the window's open it's fine...if all windows are closed, then you'll have difficulty breathing during the night w/ the fan on...

I HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE W/ THIS..

my roommate forgot to open the window, and we closed our door because the guests were being too loud....but we left the fan blowing.....i woke up around 3am choking...my roommate said he did too during the night....

we opened the window, left the fan on...and it was fine...we woke up the next morning...

that was that...

a fan can make it too low. and people can get cold (the disease) from being too cold. what's so hard to believe about this?

edit: err i'm not so sure now. searching for info.
seems like i could have been mislead on this issue for all these years...

The fan shouldn't effect if you catch a cold or not.

If you are too cold while you're sleeping, you will be uncomfortable, wake up, and turn the fan off.

I've never found any evidence that being cold makes you sick.
