as long as the window's open it's fine...if all windows are closed, then you'll have difficulty breathing during the night w/ the fan on...

I HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE W/ THIS..

my roommate forgot to open the window, and we closed our door because the guests were being too loud....but we left the fan blowing.....i woke up around 3am choking...my roommate said he did too during the night....

we opened the window, left the fan on...and it was fine...we woke up the next morning...

that was that...

don't be silly. The idea is absolutely ridiculous. If anything, you're going to slightly pressurize the room, making it easier to breathe.

as long as it's not blowing right at your head..it's fine. In the summer I was always taught to keep it doing that back and forth thing...but to place the fan by your feet. Keeps you cool, and no mosquito problems. yay!

I always have a fan blowing on my face when I sleep. I've been doing it for at least 6 years now, with no ill effects.

My wife and I like to have a fan in the room just for the simple fact it supplies just enough noise while were sleeping. Since I have taken it doen for the move we have not been getting good sleep.

I have big lips myself and never have had that problem.

Well, I also have allergies, and tend to be breathing through my mouth by the morning before I can get cleared again. That may have something to do with it.

Other than that, all I can say is my whole family is prone to chapped lips. Maybe it's a genetic thing?

Ummm... NO! Whenever it's hot out at night, I run my ceiling fan at night rather than the air conditioner. I have never even come close to suffocating because of a fan. That's just crazy.

We usually run a ceiling fan on (low) while we sleep for the soothing "white noise" effect. We're used to the feel of air circulating in the room so when we don't run the fan, it is often more difficult to fall asleep.

However, air gently ciruclating in the room is not the same as aiming a fan, blowing air over your skin the entire night. The fatigue and health issues that can be attributed to the latter are worth noting.

The two main biophysical reactions attributed to consistent forced air over skin during sleep is that your body continuously attempts to compensate for heat and moisture loss (or heat/moisture retention) and that the continual stimulation does not allow your skin and muscle to properly relax for proper rest.

If the ambient room air tempterature is warmer than your body temperature then the forced air moving across your skin creates a cooling effect drawing heat away from your body. If the ambient room air temp is lower than your body temp the forced air causes your body to over compensate for the temperature difference and closes your skin pores and tightening muscles; trapping in moisture and oxygen which would normally be allowed to exchange. The effect is greater in a situation where air is blown directly at you as opposed to air mildly circulating within a room. Along with the "cooling effect" comes dehydration as the air movement drawing heat away from your body also draws moisture.

The Cliff-notes explanation is that your body does not rest properly when experiencing continual stimulation throughout the night. The simple argument is that if your body is continually compensating for external stimuli then it's not resting. Inability to properly rest results in non-optimal health conditions.

Just because someone may have slept this or that way for a number of years or is unable to sleep once having gotten used to certain environments does nothing to invalidate the biophysical argument of stress on your body. It just expresses mental and or physical acceptance/dependency on a learned behavior. The amount of degraded health for that person may not be significant enough to be recognized as a cause for concern for that person or, that person just does not realize how affected they are. One person's health anathema is another's road to fruition.

Most people do not realize the differential health benefit resulting from proper rest, correct posture or healthy eating. Most of us get by and are used to the way we live - basing relevance on what we are used to rather than what we should be used to.

*BTW - referring to Sleep Apnea: CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) masks are used to gently force a constant flow of air into the nasal and throat passageways of a sleep apnea patient in order to maintain an unobstructed breathe flow. Those who suffer from sleep apnea are unable to breathe properly during sleep and are unable to rest properly due to that inability.
