I will definitely upgrade!
(...running Beta 2 now and waiting for MS to send me RC1-CD... and then the final Version [or maybe two?)

This thread is amusing, winxp is just windows 2000 with a few added toyz. If you have windwos 98/Me, XP would be a good way to go, as for users who already have windows 2000 as I do, it would be a waste of money, unless you get it free, as some of you do.

I also do not like the new registration format, it is a invasion of my privacy. So, when is it going to end, after they get my social security #, next born child, right arm.... god knows.. what my machine has in it, as for hardware, and software (os excluded) is non of there business. They want people to believe it is for piracy, and licensing compliance. But what is going to stop them from taking the information they say they need about your machine/personal informaion, and using it for there benifit in future product.. ways to rip us off, force us to use there products.... etc.. Sounds to me like a tool to monopolize us even more.(ok I'm done)

Anyhow.. I personally believe XP is a joke, kind of like win Me was to win 98, winxp is to windows 2000, since XP is built off the windows 2000 platform. You wasted your money if you upgraded from from win98se to win me, as you would if you went to winxp from win 2000.

just my 1.5 cents worth

Regards,
Daniel

I'm not a huge MS fan, but Windows 2000 is pretty nice. Ok, so I go buy Windows XP. Then I have to get MS's permission to use it? Screw that, I'm happy with 2000.

If my upgrade history is any indication, I'll wait a year and a half before considering it and another half a year before installing. My philosophy is to let everyone else deal with the headaches and head scratching before I do, then stand in awe as the first service pack rolls around.

I'll probably get it when it comes out. I'm running RC1 and I was amazed at some of the things it supports out of the box. It has built in PPPOE support, a built in firewall, built in unzip software, built in picture viewer like the quicktime picture viewer. Those are all things I download the minute I install an OS, but XP had it installed and ready to go at setup. The setup program is ridiculously easy. I honestly believe I could walk my mom through the setup over the phone, and if you knew my mom and computers, you would know an accomplishment that would be.

I expect that I'll stay with Win2K for a while. I'm not sure if I'll move more towards Linux or get XP eventually.

Staying with Windows 2000 on my main rig. Well, hmm..but for $10 I can get XP (Gotta love UT! ) so I might tinker with it on the second comp.

I'll probably end up getting it, but I'll try to score an educational copy first if I can.

Let's see.. RC1 is 180 days? Same for RC2? Or do you think they'll have an October 25 dead date no matter what built into the software?

So whenever my time is running out, I suppose I'll have to make a move

I'm perfectly happy with Win 2000 on this machine. It has been running fine for a year. I will leave this machine as is. On the new machine I will be building in the last Quarter of this year (waiting for some new chipsets to come out first) I will install Win XP Pro on it and turn off all the bells and whistles unless I find them usefull of course.

What about drivers for XP? What if they are not upto par when it is released? Will it still be worth it? I have a V5 in 2k and is less bitchy than the other cards on the market i've dealt with. So if XP doesn't support certain products, what are these ppl(like me) supposed to do? Let me be the first to thank Nvidia for helping us X3DFX ppl out:disgust:

Also how much memory will the Home version require? I know 9x runs best with just 128megs of memory with a handful of services, and 64mb is like the bottom requirements to run 9x.

It's got that weird new UI, which if I do get it I will turn off right away. And I'll set the Start Menu back to the traditional style. So why get the new one, if I'll end up tweaking it to be exactly like Win2k is now?
