I am in Hawaii on vacation, and have been watching the news. I saw the thing with the U.S. spy plane and wondered if the "increased relations" thing was just a cover up. Now what really scared me was, as I was going outside to suntan, the air raid siren starts going off. I look over to my dad who was sitting on a chair outside and he has a equal amount of concern. We wait until it stops and go over to the tv and turn it on. Phew, it was just a test. Me and my dad thought China was coming. That's the most scared I've been in my life. I thought that China had finally decided to start WWIII and take out the US. (Or try to...)

I used to be a Concierge at a hotel and every time they would run the test on the sirens, the phones would ring off the hook with visitors worried we were under attack. It was kind of funny, but a little sad at the same time. It is a monthly thing - just like the Emergency Broadcast Systems test on your TV. BTW, I know the point of this thread is if China will attack, but just thought I'd add a little about the sirens thing.

Deeko - I'm assuming you're in HS or something to come up with such a brilliant response. What do they teach kids in schools nowadays? Oh yeah, the US can just squash any country that comes by. Do you realize the cost on a human, economic, and social level that something like that would exact on us? Have you heard you heard of nuclear weapons? Do you know that the Red Army is the second most powerful military in the world?

What's my point? Don't be soooo damned ethnocentric to think that if such a travesty were to happen, that the US could swat them away like a bug becaause the reality would be much, much uglier.

China isn't a threat. Think again. I do believe if they wanted to they would beat us pretty good. Their military is enormous.

They have nothing to move their army with. Their navy is pathetic compared to ours, as is their airforce. All they have is a big number of infantry equiped with sub-par equipment and lacking solid training commanded by officers who are political appointees and therefore are incapable of mustering what it takes to fight a real battle. Their army is no threat to our mainland.

China won't attack the US unless the US. Until Bush starts pushing himself around too much the world is still ultimately behind the US and the important countries in the world vs. China = China losing badly.

I don't think China is stupid enough to attack the US, when they are doing a great job of catching up to the US economically.

How do you figure that the US will win if we go to war with China?
Let say we have 1000 nukes while China have 100 nukes, and both side dispend all of the nukes on each others. We turn China &amp; the rest of the planet to a glass ball, while China turn the US &amp; the rest of the world into a dust bowl...The equation is no one win in a nuclear war contest :|

He he he, you cannot put a country with nukes into submission, but you can anhiliate them unless they get to you first.

China invasion is almost impossible. Remember US is china biggest trading partner (with surplus is on china side), war with US would definitely damage china economy.

What China is doing now is simply posturing, nothing else.

ELP Deeko was wrong to think that the US would crush China in a millisecond. For either side to win, assuming neither wanted to surrender, the war would be incredibly long. China has a massive army but they do believe in quantity vs. quality and I'll take the latter any day of the week. It would be a good fight but ultimately I'd put my money on the US.

Anyway, the US would be able to muster more world allies than China anyway.

Plantanthera When you start talking about nukes its impossible to say who would win. China has a smaller land mass with a greater density of people (over 1 billion now). I think nukes would hurt them more, but really no side wins when you start nuking (I would think). Nukes suck and I hope no country ever uses them in war.

Well, like the previous poster said, the fact that we're trading partners seriously puts a damper on any war.

-gl- Kind of the way Russia did when they went free market as well right? Hehe, had to throw that in. But seriously, in China's situation, going free market may not be the best idea yet. Although most things are government controlled, there's currently a lot of companies that're privately owned in China. My brother works for a Chinese engineering company that has operations in the US and he says Shanghai is pretty Westernized. Anyhow, this kind of brings to light the fact that in this global economy, the mega-corporations that operate out of many different countries certainly complicates matters. By the same token, there's no interest on either side to batter a country, even on an economic level. For instance, the recession here in the US affects the market in Tokyo, London, everywhere. The reverse can also happen. In fact, you can also argue that the recession in Asia for the last few years belated impacted our own. *Sigh*, as an econ major, I can't help but think that 90% of foreign policy is dictated by $.


Regardless of politcal beliefs, its the Benjamins that make the world go round...even in China.
