I think China is physically bigger than the USA. It appears a lot bigger on globes at least. Even if most of it is uninhabited...

Hehe, very little of China is uninhabited considering it's population is more than three times that of our own.

I don't think the Chinese have the capability to bomb Hawaii, yet. China has no aircraft carrier, no long-range attack aircraft, and no submarine that has the ability to launch cruise missile or ICBM. Her navy has never trained to fight in the open sea, and I believe it is even weaker than the Japanese navy, which is quite small. The US, ofcourse, has all of the above. If the US decided to sell the Aegis destroyers to Taiwan, Taiwan will have a better navy that China.

I was exaggerating guys. My point was, we'd win, even if it was long and taxing, so why would they try?

War with china == scary.

All it would take is the poeple getting united behind the task of annihilating the US. If you thought the US produced a hell of a lot during WWII, wait until the chinese kick into gear, with a population 5? times our size. Hell, they could stand to lose 3 men to every US soldier killed and still win.

Of course, nukes bring it into different territory, but I can say I would much rather have an extended conventional war than a short nuclear/biological/chemical one. The weapons of mass destruction are downright scary, and should never be used. All it serves is the destruction of civilians. Want to see bad things? Wait until someone nukes New York City.

I highly doubt China would militarily attack the U.S. It isn't even close to what they want. The U.S. is a huge trading partner all over the world, and China really doesn't want to upset that.

Now, as far as hostilities between the U.S. and China go, I DO question that. U.S. involvement with Taiwan has China ripped. As Pocatello said, if the U.S. started selling Navy equipment and arms to Taiwan(say, destroyers and such!) Taiwan would have a very powerful Navy compared to surrounding countries. And in a war separeted by lots of water, a strong navy will almost always win hands down.

So it pretty much depends on how Bush deals with Taiwan. It will piss China off even more if the U.S. embraces Taiwan, and that will only make open hostility more likely.

<< With our military in shambles I think the Red Army could tear us a new one >>

Our military may not be what it once was, but luckily neither is the former soviet military. China has manpower (lots and lots of it), but it would be pretty futile to enter into war with us... too much to lose and not much to gain.

And concerning vietnam, I think the following quote sums it up nicely:

<< You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia; and only slightly less well known is this: Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line! >>

without the United States the whole world might as well be in the Dark Ages.
nobody should be stupid enough to even entertain thoughts of a formal war with the US, there is no chance for ANY kind of gain whatsoever.

i'm happy atleast a couple ppl mentioned previous land wars in asia vietnam/korea.. we kicked major ass!! err right. We're just lucky china isn't militaristic..they are more worried about advancing their standard of living then anything else.

and yes, we could nuke china into wasteland.. but they could also do that to us I forgot how many nukes they have, but someone in this thread said 100 for arguements sake. 1 nuke per major city.. and the us is pretty much gone. 1000 nukes going into china would destroy them pretty well.. the fallout would blow around the world and wipe out a bunch more

China's going free market the right way...in a regulated, slow manner. Hell, Canada's been taking advantage of it very much with our government sponsored "Team Canada" visits to China.

Russia went free market with no regulation, no rule of law, and just poor government. Big difference.

I'm sorry but seeing as it has not been said..

ALL YOUR CHINESE BASE ARE BELONG TO US!

<< They have nothing to move their army with. Their navy is pathetic compared to ours, as is their airforce. All they have is a big number of infantry equiped with sub-par equipment and lacking solid training commanded by officers who are political appointees and therefore are incapable of mustering what it takes to fight a real battle. Their army is no threat to our mainland. >>

Yep.. I'd agree with you there and seeing as our infantry will be equipped with the "Land Warrior" system within the near future they would be at even more of a disadvantage.. computers make all the difference!

Not really. Desert storm is considered the last of that type of war. We had the liberty of being able to build up weeks in advance moving slow heavy armor over there.. Thats why our military is undergoing transformation right now. Quick strike forces are the future

-Gl - Yep, and then we're both in agreement. My rib about Russia was just that a joke .

Anyhow, regarding a post about nothing to be gained with war with the US. We can broaden that stroke and say there's nothing to be gained with war.

Do you really think that China isn't building up its technology? I think that technology is easier to catch up to them man power...so in the future, wouldn't the U.S. be at a disadvantage? Plus, China has all those piracy things going on...technology-wise i mean <shrugs>

All I have to say is if this were ever to happen, which I seriously doubt, we should be smart enough to stay on our own soil (for the most part barring some subs, navy and bombers) we could take them. So many people here are talking abou the ratio of their population to ours when it is really irrelevent since we don't need to step onto their soil.

<<Any American who thinks that the American army could beat any other army in a rather short period of time obviously hasn't learned from Viet Nam.>>

Not a relevant comparison. We never tried to win the war in Viet Nam, it just gradually escalated over a number of years. We could have EASILY run right over the North Vietnamese IF we had decided to. That fact is irrefutable.
Now the way we actually did fight that war was in total contrast to other wars that had a more clearly defined purpose such as WW's I and II and the Gulf war. We had clearly defined goals, we held on to what we had in the beginning, built up, then kicked butt until we had accomplished those goals.
That was not the case in Vietnam.

As far as this incident going on with China right now, their military obviously would love to get their hands on the equipment inside that plane. Hopefully the crew had time to destroy the really sensitive stuff before the reds got in there. I believe that China will use the crew as a bargaining chip for some kind of demands they will make soon. That's how governments like China operate.

China doesnt want war with the US to gain world domination. China wants to be pals with the US to gain it. Lets face it, china has the quikest developing economy and techology in the world. Sure, they are far far from where they intend to be, but if things continue the way they are now, and the US and other western countries helping them (cause its the largest potential market in the world) in the future China will be the only communist country of any significance in the world and the largest economic power. Now THAT is an idea to worry about for the western world.
