Directly for DX8, it is a touch call between the Radeon and GTS. There isn't a clear winner as Radeon supports EMBM, but lacks a lot of combiner functions that the GTS has. Or just wait an month or so and get NV20..

Nvidia drivers always have excellent OpenGL support so probably Nvidia.

The driver support for the Radeon is very good, they're fast and stable and there've been many updates. The new NV20 is going to be priced between $550-$600. If that's in your budget you should wait to see what it has to offer, if not then the Radeon is superb. Try to compare one side by side with the GTS. Makes for an easy decision!

i like my radeon and all, but if money is no object GF2 ultra of course... but its sorta unfair to compare a beefed up version of one card to the first revision of another, dontcha think?

then later on its no doubt Geforce3 which has 100% support on DX8

If you want have a look at the quality of images in the future, take a look at the standard ATI &quot;Ark&quot; Demo that showcases features now yet supported under DirectX or download a reasonable fascimile under Quicktime. Last, here are a collection of posts from those who have switched

thanx for all yours advices, i think i will pick a radeon64.
i make it base on the performance compare the price
as R64 has much better price than GTS, which it costs almost the same as a VIVO 32ddr geforce mx, and has a performance and quality of a GTS.

but again, i will wait because geforce3 is coming out and the price on GTS and Radeon both will drop at that time.

Just to add, if you are running reasonably high resolutions you may not want a Geforce as the 2d is really sub-par IMHO. At 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 it drives me crazy, another reason I went for the Radeon. However, I wonder if the Geforce 3 will fix this.

I went from a hercules prophet ddr, to a ati radeon le, not bad for 90 bux My prophet was 270 bux when i got it.

I wouldn't care about bump mapping much. I see examples of it on water. ooh, messy water how WONDERFUL. EMBM makes things look like plastic too.
basically we don't have DX8 games yet. So who cares? In a year's time when we do you'll be on the NV20 anyway.

angus, I had 2 different GTS cards and 1280 sucked royally.

Ben will tell you that this only occurs on Trinitron-tubed monitors, and RobsTV will tell you that Elsa and Leaktek GTS cards are fine.

I've heard/spoken with enough people to think otherwise, but I cant' say for sure, as both my monitors and trinitrons and I had neither the Elsa nor Leadtek varieties.

You know, I went monitor shopping lately and realized something, I think all Trinis look like complete sh!t. I'm not joking, and I should broaden that statement to include all AG monitors period. I couldn't find one that I could tollerate(I can &quot;see&quot; the d@mn grill, makes everything look hazy as hell to me even on a Edit Matrox /Edit G200, no, they didn't have a G400 handy) to look at for more then a few seconds at a time on a 2D desktop. Perhaps saying they look like sh!t is a bit strong, more like they all look fuzzy and washed out to me anyway

I looked at them on Matrox, nVidia(TNT) and ATi(not a Radeon though) boards and didn't care for any of them. Was nV worse then the rest? Yes, on the Trinis at least(didn't see any big difference on the Samsung AG monitors I looked at though), but they still looked noticeably inferior to even the low end slot/shadow mask tubes. It may well be that I can't see it on non Trini AG monitors as well cause I can see the grille clearer and it makes all the boards look hazy to me. In 3D I like the looks of the Trinis a lot(particularly the FD, schweeeet), but outside of color saturation I just don't like them.

I ended up picking up a NEC MultiSync95(shocked how cheap it was) as it was the best(by my eyes and when buying a monitor your eyes are the only way to go of course) 19&quot; I could find(couldn't find one 21&quot; I liked:| though I was planning on sticking in the ~$500 range so no good 21&quot; helped there).

After hooking my new monitor up and comparing it I have to say that this one, with GeForce installed and no RFI mod, is much crisper to my eyes @1600x1200 then the AGs paired with ATi, Matrox or 3dfx boards in 2D. Course, if I have a slot/shadow with anything higher then .26dot pitch then I get the same impression(for some reason I can't find an AG with a small enough grill pitch as to not see it). For 3D, AGs in general and particularly the FD Trinis look fuggin sweet to me, but in 3D the nV boards look quite a bit better to me most of the time due to proper scene rendering anyway

I went with a couple of friends that spend all day at work in from of monitors and a great deal of there free time and when I told them what I was seeing(you know me, always at a loss for words)they raised their eyebrows, shrugged and said (paraphrasing) &quot;if you say so&quot;(both require glasses a fact which I am quick to remind them of if the need comes around).Summary- I have been keeping my mouth shut on the 2D issue as of late as I know my eyes are seeing things that most people's don't(they looked real d@mn confused when I was b!tching about how blurry the FDs were in 2D).
