w/o question, the top of the line CRT's are better than the top of the line LCD's, in my opinion anyway.
but when your talking mid range, it's very close but i'd take the LCD.
Low range a $250.00 LCD is better than any crt you can get in the low to low mid range.
bad crt's are really bad.
WHAT!? I have a HITACHI 19" CM721F and it rocks for only $240, you can get a good CRT for a lot less than you can get a good LCD. A good LCD with same viewable size (18") would cost $800. And the 240 one would still beat it in resolution scaling. I dont have any lines across the screne or swirling either.
i don't know where you get that. i have a 19" samsung sitting next to a 17" LCD that cost me $600.00 18 MONTHS ago and they have the exact same viewable size.
you can get a good 17" for $450 to $500 now if you look.
i'm not arguing that LCD's are cheaper but that low end lcd's are preferable to low end CRT's. i hate low end crt's.

uhhmmm, 19" crt's don't have 18 in viewable EITHER.
Do you have a 17" lcd in front of you?? I didn't think so. i'm sitting here looking at both a 19" crt and a 17" lcd. don't tell me they aren't the same size. they are both 17" diagonally. an 18" LCD would be bigger than the 19" crt.
SO a 19" CRT = 17" LCD and that's only a good 19" crt.

Well maybe your monitor was low end but mine is 18" viewable, telling me i dont know the size of the monitor in front of me

I agree....all you LCD people out there....do you game much? At every LAN I got to there are a couple LCD's and the ghosting is usually pretty bad IMO. That and they can't seem to get the color red right on most LCD's I've seen. Usually an orange-like mixture....

Actually, I have an 18" LCD and an 19" CRT (Sony G420P)... and they're the exact same viewable size. 18".
not that it REALLY matters, to a degree, though.... I run them at completely different resolutions.

are all 19" CRT's 18" viewable?? NO.
I clearly said that a HIGH END CRT is better than a HIGH END LCD.
i don't know why we are getting side tracked on the issue of size as size is only ONE of the reasons people buy displays.
I'd take a good 15" LCD over a low to mid range 19" CRT.

Absolutely. They have different strengths and weaknesses. That's why I have both--so that I can utilize whichever one suits me best. After having both, I'm not sure I would ever want to go back to only having one of the two.

They are both animals, and we WILL compare them to one another ...period!

Of course you will. And that's not a bad thing. I jut think that BentValve is pointing out that deciding a "clear victor" is going to be difficult.... because they both have strengths and weaknesses (and in this case, a lot of the strengths of CRTs are the weaknesses of LCDs and vice versa). So any "victor" is going to be for some set of circumstances--basically, what the user uses the monitor for.

A victor will be decided when it is discovered which device has more anandtecher's favor
So yes they are different animals, they each have their place.
Correct BentValve, and this thread will decide which device finds its 'place' in a garbage can! I get your point bent valve but lets just see what more people consider 'best' in their opinion...

Do you realize that for the price of a low end LCD, (yes low end LCDS blow just go to store and look they are blurry), you can get a near high end CRT that would compeltly own it.
And if your saying that my $240 monitor is somehow high end beign that its 18' viewable than well for $240 you can get a high end CRT but still cant aford a low end LCD with same viewable
You backed yourself into that one
