POLL: Toshiba vs. HP

Which would you consider to be higher quality, assuming specs are equal and prices are similar?

I'm partial to the Toshiba Portege line of notebooks. They are very light and good. Though pricey unfortunatly.

Does Toshiba load them up with a bunch of useless software like HP does? Ya know, like Barney Teaches the ABC's and 17 different anti-spyware programs and junk like that?

haha. I don't believe so. I'm sure there is some bloatware installed, however Toshiba machines are targeted more towards business and professional types. Not 5 year olds, and as such will have a more practical and down-to-business oriented software base.

*Just to clarify that last post* Toshiba Satellite models seem to have quite a bit more of the bloatware stuff installed on them, as the satellite brand is targeted to your average Joe user. the Tecra and Portege Models are what I am refering to.

Actually, it goes more like this:

Toshiba Tecra > HP Business line > Toshiba Satellite (and maybe Protege, not sure of its quality) > HP Consumer line

IBM > *

I consider the Satellites about the same quality as the HP Consumer line (except for the older ultra cheap HP's, all current ones are nicely built). Not too familiar with the Tecra tho

I have a 3.5 year old Toshiba Satellite and my mom has a 1 year old 17" HP laptop. The Toshiba has a lot of heat issues, but I don't think that would still be a problem today. It came with some junk software, but not that much.. it only takes a couple minutes to uninstall it.
The HP has had 0 problems.
I don't think you can go wrong either way, but my vote goes to Toshiba.

I think if you talk about HP's really crappy consumer series then those suck.

If you talk about the business lines like nc6000? WOW THAT just KICKS THE CRAP out of every laptop and even T42.

IBM is currently still the king of laptop-land.

However, that might change now that Lenovo has taken over...

I'll have an nx6125 in the near future so I'll make my final judgement then, but I sincerely doubt it would be better than a Thinkpad T-series.

And I wouldn't worry about Lenovo: IBM is going to be overseeing them for the next five years, no worries

We have nc6000s at work, I've used IBM T2x and 600 series extensivly in the past, and currently have an HP Omnibook 510. All are well built machines. I will probably pick up a nc6000 for myself once the fall semester starts, it definatly beats the T4x out on value, IBMs just don't drop in price fast enough for me to buy them.
