It depends on what you're going to be doing. If you're going spend a lot of time playing games, then the GTS-V. If you're going to spend more time in 2d, then the V5.

i owned a gts 32mb and a voodoo5 agp
the gf2 was better in nearly everything even though the V5 cost me damn near 300 bucks when i got it
just flat out better drivers
unless you are playing old glide games then the gts-v would be better and the overclock would make more difference

hey man.... quoting all economics professors around the globe "there is no such thing as a free lunch!" anyway, the only game i play is Counter-Strike... and the voodoo5 already performs very nicely. i'm not sure exactly how much better the gts-v could be... there is only one way to find out i suppose. time to start ghosting
Dude...all you play is CS? V5, no questions asked. That game is old enough to run at decent res with 4x FSAA and still get playable speeds. Thus, speed ain't an issue. Look at quality. And that isn't even a comparison, especially with FSAA.

Hey, if you wanna play 3DMark all day, by all means, get the GTS And honestly, there are some situations where the GTS would be superior to the Voodoo5. However, CS is not one of them.

well the gts-v is both faster and much better supported. granted some dont have as good 2d. but well its really a no brainer.

The GTS runs at 200/333, I guess the GTS-V runs at the same speeds, but I hear from many sources the GTS o/c's to GF2TI speeds of 250/400, that's quite some boost. I don't recall any V5 cards o/c'ing very well at all, tying the RAM to the core speed certainly limits a lot.

Of course there is a lot more to perf than clock speeds, just look at the Parhelia. The GTS is clearly faster, even at stock (and not only in 3Dmark ... yawn). If your gaming ambitions are small then the increase in '2D' image quality may tip the scales in favour of the V5, as might the 64MB of RAM for more demanding games (did V5 cards really have that much!). I'd go for the GTS myself, but as I've already said it is a pretty close call.

Don't forget, while the V5 has SDRAM, because of the dual chip design, it has double the bandwidth. People whined that they didn't include DDR, thats why, they didn't need to.

Handy advice though for anybody else reading this thread who's in the market for a budget gfx card. I would still strongly rec paying a little more for a GF3TI200 or Rad8500/8500LE ($90). If they cost too much a SiS Xabre400, Rad7500, GF2TI or GF4MX ($60-80) are all better cards, the Xabre even supports some DX8 hw funcs which all of the other budget end cards lack.

I just like those useless comments about SUPERIOR nVidia drivers. Thats a plain BS. I still own my V5 and to be honest, I have tried probably almost all games out there recently (well, most of them just a demo), anyway, not a SINGLE driver issue. I have seen friends with GTS - not quite the same situation.
Even recent games - some of them - Warcraft3, GTA3, Motoracer3, StarWars...,Superbikes2001, GrandPrix4 etc., etc. EVERYTHING just works perfectly, so, if You do not know what You are talking about, shut up, newer drivers do not necessarily mean better drivers.
V5 drivers are probably the most solid and perfect drivers ever made for a graphics card.
And by the way - 2D is really superb, GTS 2D really sucks, have one at work, wow - fuzzy like hell.

Errr, some valid points vlieps.

But V5 only gives sub-GF2GTS perf, sure the '2D' image quality is better, but with the selling prices of GF4MX, Rad7500, SiS Xabre400 and even GF3 and Rad8500/9000 cards it makes no sense whatsoever to keep a V5 unless you enjoy 800x800x16 gaming, as for running new games, even current games, the V5 sucks dude. If your gaming ambitions are moderate and your budget tight then a GTS or V5 are fine, but saying you can run even modern (let alone new) games is certainly stretching it a bit. As for drivers, V5 have great drivers for Win98, but as for Win2000 & XP they rely heavily on 3rd parties and enthusiasts, hardly the mark of quality and robust drivers. 3dfx never even had moderately good OpenGL support, and since Glide is a very distant memory it would certainly make sense for anybody with even a megre budget to settle for nothing less than a Rad7500, SiS Xabre400 or GF4MX (GF2 are cheaper and offer GF4MX perf but lack '2D' image quality and AA).

The guys at Digit-life even tried to pull the V5 back out and compare it against current hardware in their monthly benchmark comparison.

Finally, we would like to make a little present to all 3dfx admirers v to present test results of Voodoo5 5500, that has even been returned from the museum and installed into the Athlon XP (VIA KT333) testbed.

However, the results were not pleasant, as its performance in current games was on the GeForce2 MX level. So, we decided not to include it into summary diagrams not to disappoint 3dfx admirers, having Voodoo cards for Unreal-based games alone.

LOL.

Well, that is true, performance is poor. And I do, in fact, play at 800x600x16, no probs at this resolutions everything is still playable. Looks not bad - well V5 16bit color is not that much different from 32bit color. Right now I do play just occasionally and it perfectly still fits my needs. No reason to spend tons of cash on a shiny Gef4 or so.
It seems that it is more important around here to have the latest and greatest, not because you actually need it but because it is cool.
I rather drink beer for those bucks

I agree whole-heartedly vlieps. A lot of people fall in to the trap of buying the 'latest and greatest' simply to keep up with friends, peer pressure etc. If your PC, gfx card etc does what you need it to, then cool, save yourself some money and be happy. After all, it wasn't so long a go taht 800x600x16 with decent FPS was considered top of the line!
